Hi Guys.

TL:DR - What should i keep, what should i sell.

So guys, i am trying to start 2024 with a mission of getting rid of stuff i don't use or atlas don't need.

Under "review" today is my IT stash and moreover, my Plex kit.

I Currently only run my Plex box for my house and some family members have access, i watch when i am working away etc. and for the most part it all works fine, the odd time Buffering or constant issues with 4K content but hey.

I am just starting out with Home Assistant, which i have used to sound my Sonos kit when my Unifi Doorbell is pressed.

I Run a Synology DS1817+ with 112TB, this hosts Docker for my Radarr, Sonarr, Plex, rUtorrent, Jacket, Flaresolverr and Home Assistant.

I Also have in my rack; now unused BUT i did plan on upgrading or extending my Plex server above:

Qnap - TVS-663 - 18TB

Qnap - TS-832XY-RP - 48TB

Netgear Readynas 2120-2 - 48TB

Couple of Dell Poweredge R510s and an R710 with dual 16core Xeons and 128GB RAM

A Wartercooled Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX 32-Core with 32GB RAM

I have a bunch of NUC's and Optiplex PC's i could use as "nodes" or "hosts"

I am trying to clear some space and recoup some costs since ive retired this hardware so i dont NEED to use any of it BUT if you guys can think of some big improvements, lets talk :-)

PS, i have a 1GB leased line at home with full Unifi Stack, Dream machine pro and pro switches with 10GB backbones and all U6 Enterprise AP's (4)

So, you run all your stuff on your synology nas, and aren't looking to be hosting or running other things? Then why do you need any of that other equipment, or 10gb network or enterprise networking kit?

If you want plex to not buffer for 4k, host it in a box with a modern igpu, or add a gpu (Intel for many streams, or faff to enable multi stand on nvidia, to one of your current systems.

If you want to expand storage that plex accesses, stop buying multiple overpriced pre built nas systems. Build a proper one that holds more drives, use a multicore cpu, with an igpu, if you want to host lots (Intel for plex) or encode etc.

One of the nucs if it's recentish will probably make a better plex host than the current nas. The pre made ones are often low powered as their fain purpose is obvs being a nas, sipping power, and modern ones running a few containers that are largely idle.

Or are you simply asking for more things you can host from home in order to justify keeping more of the kit?

So i have not bought any of this kit other than the DS1817 for Plex, it was all bought for other business related tasks and has since been retired (replaced) so rather than going to the grave yard i thought - ill re-use this kit since it has been invested in already.

If i can create a better setup then i am all for that!

I have the 10GB as i had some servers presented to ESX using iSCSI from the NAS for Veeam repo.

I've got a DS1817 and I find it fine for a basic Plex server. I don't tend to transcode anything though.

I've also got a couple of Dell Servers R720 and a T320. I did mess around with the T320 running TrueNAS but it was a bit of a pain compared to the Synology and I couldn't be bothered to put any effort into it. The R720 is full of SSD's and was my home lab during Covid. But I doubt it's been powered on since I went back to working in the office.

The current cost of electricity would put me off using it more than anything.
