England will head to the World Cup this summer with the backing of fans from the other home nations, according to a BBC Sport survey.

A UK-wide sample suggests the majority will support England - with 76% of the Northern Irish and 83% of the Welsh backing Sven-Goran Eriksson's men.

And even 67% of Scots questioned would be happy to see the Auld Enemy do well.

I wonder what the numbers would be if they had asked "Would you like to see England win the world cup"?

Aye that is shocking, every sweaty or Taff i know wants England to fail miserably

And i dont blame them one bit, i hope they continue to fail at everything :)

didnt soccer am go out on the streets of glasgow and ask random people who they will support in the world cup?

out of about 12 people 1 said england. the rest all said that they would support anyone opposing england (with 1 saying unless its germany)

I think on football focus a while back, when Berti Vogts was manager, they did an item on the state of Scottish national football. They asked a lot of Scottish kids who they supported at national level and they said England. When they were asked why they didn't support Scotland they said they were rubbish.

I don't remember it that well, but I'm pretty sure that was the case. I was surprised at that and I'm surprised that 67% of polled Scots would back England. Hard to believe really.

I find that rather surprising tbh. I have got some Scottish friends and I know they want us to lose when England play (even though they won't actually come out and say it to my face).

.....what they didnt tell you was that the poll was conducted in Morningside and Bruntsfield ;)

(for those who aren't from Edinburgh, these areas are more or less Home Counties colonies, the former mainly inhabited by well-off retired English people and the latter mainly inhabited by well-off English University students!)

/me runs off before someone mentions "skewed samples"

its precisely what makes home nations sports so charged and fun to watch is that there is an almost universal desire to see any other home nation fail miserably.

makes you pround to be British, ;)

There is no way 67% of Scottish football fans want England to do well. Maybe the old biddies want their neighbouring country to do well but actual football fans? Not a chance. I don't blame them either, we're still harping on about the last time we won the damn thing! :p

I back the other home nations though, always good to see them do well as long as it's not at our expense.

I'm backing Portugal (Got them in a sweep!). Honestly, I don't care who wins. This tournament is worthless without Giggs on the field.

I reckon thats rubbish. I support the other home nations when they're playing unless they're playing England.

I find that very, very hard to believe and I'd be surprised if I could find anyone outside of England who wants us to do well in the World Cup.

Of course its rubbish !! Personally speaking no way do I support any other nation except England.

Just like they do to us , I now take great delight in watching the Jocks , Micks and Taffs fail miserably.
