Posted in the network area, put think its more suited here. As I think its a vista problem.

Running vista X64, and iam trying to access files on my XP Pro PC, both wired into the router. I can see the XP files in vista but when I try to open a folder I keep getting this message.

Untitled-21.jpg

Closed the firewall, and its still the same. It has been working in the past, anyone know off a bug?

Have you changed usernames or passwords on the two machines? Usually need to have the same account details on each machine.

Do you mean for the log-in to windows details? If so no not touched either off them. Only got a user name and log-in for my vista PC.

Make sure that the files/folders have permission to be read, so right click > Properties > Security and add appropriate permissions.

I think your looking at it the wrong way round I can access my vista files from my XP PC, but cant access my XP from vista.

On the XP machine, create a user with the same usename and password as the Vista login and then give that user permission to access the share and files/folders on the XP machine.

Ok, how do I 'give that user permission to access the share and files/folders on the XP machine'?

Right click the folder you want to share and then choose Sharing And Security. Share and set the permissions there. Turn off Simple File Sharing in Tools>Folder Options>View to see the actual permissions instead of the Windows Sharing Wizard.
