home network setup

After bothering before and getting nowhere, and just completing a 10hour networking exam I feel i should get my home network sorted for once.

I've only ever got the pc's to see each other once and then oneday they couldnt again.

Both are on same "workgroup" : PSYNET
ip ranges are fine: solar:192.168.1.100 // psypher:192.168.1.101
on my bebox it can see both computers, and it sets dns etc etc up auto.


Now, my main rig (psypher) is vista, sets up the network being able to view itself and the speedtouch bebox via lan connection.

moms pc, solar, is on xp and has an internet gateway and a lan connection, cant see psypher at all.

both can ping eachother fine.. so any ideas?

OK - is this how it is?

BEBOX can see PSYPHER and SOLAR - can you access shares on these? or just see them on the network? (I'm assuming that BeOS uses some form of SaMBa...)

SOLAR cannot see either PSYPHER or BEBOX

PSYPHER cannot see SOLAR but can see BEBOX

Can either SOLAR or PSYPHER see shares on each other? They can ping each other, so can you UNC to each other - whether that's by netbios name or ip address?

sorry, be box is the router from my isp

cant share files or anything such like samba etc. Should have mentioned that!

Both pc's can see the router (bebox)
but cant see eachother
can ping eachother and get a response

the "network" view shows no other wordgroup pc's etc

check your firewall settings and make sure that File and print sharing is allowed.

for some random reason since today on moms pc, i type in http://bebox to connect to the routers gui, it links to that wiki page

disabled firewall on both pc (windows and nic) also set up to allow print sharing on a different occasion, still wouldnt see each other.

if that doesn't work, try:

Go to network connections and view the properties page - do you have Client for Microsoft Networks and File and Printer sharing for Microsoft Networks listed?

on xp the little tick is enabled, forgot how to check on vista, but im sure i remember seeing it enabled.

Are you using the *any* other firewall software? (The router's HW firewall does not matter here) And is the windows firewall definitely disabled?

nope, none at all. I reallly cant sus this out. (and the networking exam went so well, ack! I feel a fool, haha)

Yeah - it's a funny one...

Try adding a new share to the XP box and then see if you can access it.

Why are your gateways different on the two machines? Psyphers gateway is 192.168.1.254 (should be 192.168.1.1) whereas solar is 192.168.1.1 as expected.
