Home network Upgrade

Nice :)

I use a Pi3 for my Unifi, also does my WOL and PiHole DNS duties.

Pi3 was my next option until I saw the docker container. The ubiquiti stuff has got me hooked though so probably going to order a key and Switch next.

This stuff is worst than crack and Apple.

Tell me about it.

Started with a AC-Pro, now I have a USG and 24 port switch too.

Not buying any more until 10Gbe becomes more mainstream.

Struggling to get the USG to work with Sky Fibre :(

I’ve read that you don’t need the username/password anymore (which I have anyway) but can’t connect. I was using the ECI modem from open reach. All lights up green just no internet using the USG.

My BB contract ends soon so will probably look for an ISP that works with open reach modem or buy one of the Draytek ones.

Running UniFi on docker isn’t very reliable either, my UAP was working after I swapped everything back but couldn’t see it in devices so the cloud key is definitely next.

This could be the solution for your Sky issue. https://community.ubnt.com/t5/UniFi...-using-white-bt-modem-and-Usg-3p/td-p/1898487 there is a issue with the config not persisting a power cycle which can only be fixed if you edit a .json file which is dangerous as if done incorrectly can brick the device.

Raspberry Pi are very reliable to run a controller.

I had a read of that thread earlier, might have to give it a go.

Can I just access it via terminal or do I need to connect to the console port?

I’ve also noticed the USG no longer has a VOIP port, it’s WAN2 on mine.

I might swap docker for a Pi 2 before spending the money on the cloud key then and see how it goes. It’s the ports I’m having issues with, because it’s running in a container even just adding a UAP requires command line.

You SSH in with a program like PuTTY. The VOIP port never got used for it's intended VOIP function so they repurposed it as a second WAN port.

USG has gone back into its box :(

I was getting some very strange DNS issues which I couldn’t fix. It only effected cables devices so the USG was the culprit. I was running it with the sky router in DMZ mode. Worked fine for a couple of days then started giving me issues.

I was lost when trying to use the OpenReach ECI modem to authenticate with Sky so it was all I could do. Might just run without the USG until I switch ISP.

Any recommendations on ISPs that work with the USG and ECI modem?

What "strange DNS issues"?

Sounds like double NAT to me.

Yes it was double NAT but I had the same google DNS set everywhere and but it must have got lost some where. Worked via wifi though so I just give up for now.

I also though you could use the ECI modem if you have some JSON file on the controller that does the auth 61

Might just buy the Draytek modem though if the ECI is a complete no go

ChrisD is right, it's unlikely to be the modem that's the issue - ECI modems were used and supplied by Sky/BTO, they are well proven and stable, the issue is likely with the router config.

I never managed to get the ECI modem even working or detected in USG. I only ever managed a connection by putting the Sky router/modem in DMZ mode but this caused the DNS issue.

Previous post on here mentioned the JSON file is the workaround for Sky but I couldn’t get it to work. I’ve seen a few posts claiming it does work though.

Currently now I’m back to the Sky router just doing the DHCP with wifi disabled and it will probably stay that way until I change ISP

I'm guessing the WiFi was using the sky hub for it's DHCP and the wired users were using the USG?

Sounds like sky should just let us use our own kit instead of the rubbish they supply :)

They do on Pro, it's really easy on standard, but not officially supported, you just need a router that supports the correct options - that used to be a problem, now it's reasonably easy, it just happens not to be so easy on the USG seemingly.
