is there any step by step guides to doing this i have a netgear dg834pn router attatched to my main comp but i want to do file share with my lappy.....i am struggling to set it up......and if i do get it set up will it be simple to set it so i can print docs from my lappy through the main comp.........i am a total newb to networks by the way

Assuming you don't have any firewalls on the client machines, it should be as simple as hooking them up.

well i have went through the wizard on windows it looks as though it is set up but when i look in the shared folder on my main rig i cant see any pics that i have put in the lappy shared folder

Try Start, Run, \\[Machine's IP]. The My Network Places folder can take an age to update.

right i have got it so i can view the pictures and docs on my main comp from the lappy how do i view the shared stuff on my lappy from my main rig....the network places on the lappy just shows up as netgear router

Yes. Start, run, cmd, ipconfig /all should give you that.

right i typed in that ip addy on my lappy and it give me the shared folders on my lappy if i type the ip in of my main comp will i get the shared stuff off my main comp

If you run it on a machine, it'll give you that machine's IP. You need to run off to the other machine and plug that in.
For example:

On laptop, ipconfig gives you 192.168.1.2. You'd then enter \\192.168.1.2\ on the other machine, to access the laptop.
