Hi All

I once thought myself to be tech savi I have built my own computers and Im that guy at work who gets asked to fix stuff (i usually turn it off and on again) but im hitting a wall when it comes to networking.

I have recently moved into a new house and its a lot bigger than the old one and i wanted a good connection for all my devices and guff. so here is what i tried bear with me its a bit long winded.

After researching wireless routers which magazine recommended the Linksys EA6350 a bit pricey at 120 quid but i thought what the hell its the best review. very quickly i realized that it comes with no built in modem (I know ima dumbass right?) so my plan changed a lil bit heres how i had planned my network. My ISP provided me with a Zyxel modem router i have this in the primary telephone socket in the house via adsl filter plugged directly into the back of this using cat5 Ethernet cables is my desktop PC, a cat 5 cable that runs downstairs to an Ethernet switch in this switch will go my smart tv, xbox one and then to a devolo dlan500 parent socket plugged into the downstairs electric ring main with its child at the furthest plug point. the last Ethernet cat 5 cable i have put to the linksys internet input port not wanting my 120 quid totally wasting i thought i could use the lynksys to manage my wireless network nothing out the ordinary just a few tablets smart phones a printer etc this would keep my main devices with a solid connection even tho most would connect wireless to the zyxel and give me an easy to manage wireless hub so to speak. the problem im currently having is when i try to run the setup on the lynksys I create my account then it says to update the firmware but i cannot connect to the lynksys to do this when i put the IP address in a browsers address bar it brings me to the login page of the zyxel router clearly i have either got something wrong or the whole concept if wrong could someone please point me in the right direction this is starting to frustrate me somewhat thanks for reading.

You need to connect to the Linksys, clearly it's running on the same IP as the Zyxel. Connect the Linksys diredt to your PC, log in and change the IP to something different from the Zyxel.

What is the IP address of the Zyxel - I am assuming 192.168.1.1

Connect to the Linksys directly (via a LAN port) and you will find this is most likely also 192.168.1.1. If it is change it to 192.168.1.254 and set its gateway to be 192.168.1.1. Then turn off DHCP on the Linksys (as you only want one DHCP server and you want that to be the Zyxel)

Then connect the cable that comes from the Zyxel (via your switch etc) to a LAN port (not the WAN port) on the Linksys.

Set the SSID on both devices to be the same with the same password.

Then you will have one wireless name and the Linksys will just be providing wireless access.

Thanks guys that was very helpfull what does the DHCP do out of curiosty it all appears to be working and i have this enabled still and have not set the gateway as i currently carnt find the setting,.

thanks again so much

DHCP is what gives IP addresses to devices.

Basically yes. Anytime you want to use a router as just an ap you connect it up like this.
