Home PC - £400

Hmm, well it was a struggle to get more than £400 so £500 is not going to happen. I have Windows 8 preview on 2 computers however I want something I can build and not have to make the 200 odd mile journey to either upgrade or fix an issue. Hence why I think Windows 7 is needed here.

its essentially the same spec, just that the top one is in a prettier looking box, compared to the merc

Why aren't you using dual channel RAM? It will affect performance, either buy 4GB as a matched pair or the 8GB Geil whilst on offer.

Since you are all now dropping the i3 idea because of the OS and cost, can you please just give in and +1 my earlier spec for £454. It's balanced very very well. It's more than they need (which is good) and they didn't pay through the nose to get it lol

and no standard hdd?
you're gonna be massively starved for space if you have any media files of sorts.
an average windows install + your random apps = 30-40gb?

I am not that up myself.. I did say that your last rig was good :) if he did not decide to spend in my i3 + Z77 mobo.

4gb single channel because 8gb is an overkill for minecraft, and both mobos have only 2 slots... So if time comes when 8 gb is necessary he will just another one in, instead of buying whole new kit.

I`ve actually read the first post and judging by his needs G840 + HD6850 is a great overkill...

hmmm...i really couldnt tell you to be honest,
adding an ssd would be nice, but the performance of the amd 3300 and integrated graphics pales (*tremendously*) incomparison to the intel spec
but that being said
an ssd makes a rig feel fast and really responsive
so its a tradeoff i guess
anything more demanding than light gaming on the cpu and gpu is gonna suck on the amd rig (but i dont know how sims 3 would run on it though...a quick google may help)

I`d be in favour of Intel rig without SSD rather than AMD rig with SSD

Performance ablities of that AMD and Intel are like hell and heaven :D But I think 3300 would be enough for the girl, maybe upgrade to 3500 you cant get it on ocUK but its 54 quid... so 10 more but has better GPU.

tbh, there is no reason to even think of getting an amd rig imo, they're just not competitive with intel at the moment

I just think about trying to get an SSD in there as it will also be used by her mother and father who are attached to Internet Explorer. So while getting some basic gaming for a girl who doesn't care about graphics might as well give her parents improved performance too.

Well at the moment she plays Sims 3 on low so even if it ran smoothly on low it would be an improvement.

I`d advise you to get my AMD spec without the A4-3300 order A6-3500 somewhere else because they dont sell it on ocUK and it will be fine and enough for the girl. I have a 850 quid rig without SSD and I cant say am struggling to write this to you because it is so slow :D

A6 has better GPU and apparently :

"We have bought four of these for our school and use them for a games club at lunchtimes, plays GRID, HAWX and Fuel all at MAX settings 1366x768, for £56 it is a bargain."

So for 10 quid more, you are sure going to get better performance.

Leave out SSD, there is really no need for it there, especially 60 gb it will get clogged up very quick and cause more confusion by having 2 HDD.

With the SSD I would install the OS and basic programs on the SSD then change the primary program files and user directories to the hard drive. So the SSD wouldn't get clogged up with games, just the OS and day to day applications.
