Home Plugs and New House

Long time lurker finally asking a question.

I've got a couple of Netgear Home Plugs which worked a treat in my old house which was a new build.

I've moved to another new build and now the same plugs cannot maintain a stable connection and always seem to lose each other.

They're plugged into a socket on their own rather than a multi way adapter as this was a problem in the old house.

Any suggestions on how to get around this? Anyone else had a similar problem?

Powerline is a lottery. If they don’t like your wiring there isn’t much you can do.

Can you identify any pattern to the problem? For example do they drop when the fridge cycles?

The most effective fix is to run Ethernet cables. That’ll give the best performance and reliability.

Are they on different mains circuits, probably an issue with the consumer unit in the new house. I've seen it a couple of times now for friends who have moved into 2018/19 new builds.

Quite likely this.

Can you test the powerlines on the same floor, or even possibly the same room to see if there's any difference.

You might be able to get them to work on the same floor but not across floors.

Also if you've bought the house, why not run some network cables?

We are having issues with the downstairs sockets but that is a power loss without the circuit tripping and doesn't happen when the home plugs stop.

Have had to switch to WiFi

The circuits are on separate fuses, got a feeling this is definitely the issue then.

Would love to run some ethernet but not sure the Mrs would be happy for me to poke some holes in the walls

Talk her into doing some decorating, and then use this chance to poke some holes in the walls. :D

While not my preferred option (cable it already), mesh Wi-fi may offer you a better result, but in all honest just run cables and be done with it if at all possible. Wives objections are usually momentary, cable lasts forever.

This tbh. Bought the BT kit and the homeplugs are now redundant. Just run the access points into a switch for wired devices.
