Home Router choice

Hi All,

I'm looking for a home router. Currently using the one built into the Be* box, but.. looking for a bit more ability :P

So, here are the requirements:

Musts
  • Able to happily keep up with an 80mbit internet connection
  • Have decent QOS rules. Gaming and VoIP should always work well, even if I'm doing an online backup or a big download
  • Have an Ethernet connection for WAN in preparation for the FTTC (I'll use the Be* box in modem mode in the meantime)

Should
  • Have a VPN client or at least decent VPN passthrough
  • Log traffic usage per device, although this isn't essential. Just in case I go with a FTTC provider that has a usage limit
  • Have Wifi-N, although I'm leaning towards getting a separate AP that I can move separately to the router

Won't
  • Be power hungry; I'm not willing to use an old x86 box running PFSense.

So I've been googling around and have seen various options; the Asus N56/N66, A Routerboard, and I'm rather liking the look of the advanced QOS options on the Gargoyle router project (http://www.gargoyle-router.com).

..but if I went for Gargoyle, what router would it be best with? Or does the Asus have what I need? Halp!

Budget is anything below triple figures. Any advice is welcomed :)

Cheers,
Blueacid

Billion 7800n:

Does do QOS and has both ADSL and Ethernet WAN ports - I don;t know about the 80Mb throughput.

It also has a VPN client and VPN passthrough works fine for me, does have 802.11N but does not log traffic at all unless using PPPoE then I think it only logs overall traffic (never used it so I can't comment)

Power wise, it's got a 12W power adaptor :D

However, a used one will be within your budget, a new one wont :(

Billion will be perfectly fine, I doubt you will see 80Mbit throughput using a routers VPN client, you would need a damn good router for that, without VPN 80Mbit will be no problem though!

Don't know of any router that allows you to monitor usage per device!

Fair enough.

I've got it, it's a good bit of kit, especially with the custom firmware. It's nice and small too, no aerials sticking out of it so quite neat. I've got mine on its side, so not on the stand and it's happily tucked away and firing out strong wireless.
