Home server build

I thought WHS2011 couldn't cope with 2TB+ drives? I've been trying to find out if it can or not - can anyone clarify? :)

From what I can find out, the 2TB limitation is for backup drives.

The more I look into it, the more I'm finding out. Apparently WHS2011 did away with "Drive extender" - which was one of the features I thought was really good. I'm kinda thinking I might be better off installing Windows 8 and using the "Storage spaces" feature - which basically does the same.

For what I'm going to use it for, I don't really need a server OS as such.

Having said that, I've read a little about LVM and may look into the possibility of setting that up with Ubuntu server. Plenty of options available.

I've run a WHS box for the past 4 years or so on atom based motherboard with a maximum of 2 GB of RAM.

The CPU wasn't really an issue if I stayed away from any transcoding the bottleneck was only having 2GB of RAM, typically running at about 80% or higher for the majority on the time.

I guess based upon my past experience with WHS a Celeron setup would be fine if you don't need transcode. I would go for a minimum of 4GB of RAM.

I've decided to utilise old equipment instead. I have a currently unused system at home that only needs hard drives added. It's an i7 920 system so not low powered but I intend underclocking and undervolting the CPU which should help - I might switch off 2 of the cores as well. I also intend to run it headless so won't be wasting electricity running a graphics card that isn't needed. As I said, it's not terribly energy efficient but it means I'm not buying a system specifically for the job (it's also pre-built and watercooled, so quiet as well). The system already has Windows 7 so it'll only cost £25 to upgrade to Windows 8.

I've ordered a 128GB SSD for an OS drive and 6x3TB Seagate Barracuda HDDs which are on offer just now. I probably won't put them all in to start with but I ordered 6 because they're quite cheap. Not home for another 2 1/2 weeks but the offer ends tomorrow so I ordered them to be sent to a neighbour. Looking forward to getting home and getting it all set up and acquiring media ;)
