I need a help for a home server help, basically i want this server accessible from my new ipad to watch movie (app needs a Samba) and I could access from other places as well (outside my house). My server setup is Intel i3 with 8 Gb memory. Thank you..

I have that apps. what I want is to setup a home server that able to support that. currently I'm using a normal windows as a server but i couldn't connect my new ipad to it.

You could just buy a small NAS like the Western Digital My Book Live, it has SAMBA turned on and configured out of the box is low cost, low power, low noise and just works if all you want is basic file and media sharing.

Its obviously not a full blown server though.

The app is able to access a Windows file share. You must have a configuration issue somewhere along the line. Give more detail.

When i want to add server with this apps, this apps gave me three options. Windows host (samba), ftp host and dropbox. I don't fancy dropbox and prefer windows host.

Samba will create an SMB share which is also what a Windows share will be too so shouldn't specifically need to be Samba.

As for remote access, setting up a software VPN would probably be your best bet

Thanks for all the information. I managed to setup my server using FTP server. I'm able to stream movies from my server to Ipad and access from outside my house. I installed FTP client on my ipad and movie player apps that support FTP. problems sort it.
