I currently have a home server but i'm looking to do a cheap upgrade. I mean, really cheap.

The current machine is a Compaq Evo running Windows Server 2003. I use it to host my wordpress blog, plus sharing files over my network, plus sharing a printer and also sharing media to my 360. Plus occasionally it hosts Unreal 2k4, CoD UO, Quake 3 servers.

The specs are:
P4 2.66Ghz
512MB
1x 40GB hard drive(OS) and 500GB hard drive(files)
No GPU(ofc)
Running it headless.

I want to upgrade because I want to run a minecraft server and the minimum specs are for 2GB of RAM, though not sure if thats for Vista/Win7.

I have to upgrade paths,

I've got a P4 3.0Ghz machine in a larger tower with more space and a more modern motherboard(as SATAI ports though may get a PCI SATA controller card for SATAII). I could get about 1GB to 1.3~GB of RAM in this machine(DDR1 RAM)

Or,

I could upgrade the computer. From overclockers i've found the following(this is canabilising parts i have from other machines)

AMD Athlon X2 250 Dual Core CPU
Gigabyte Motherboard, AM3.
2x 1GB DDR2 RAM

total price comes to £110. Doesn't sound like much, but for my budget and also what I need it for should be more than enough.

Which would be best for my uses? I don't need a powerful machine, just enough to handle a small network(2 users) and run Minecraft but also those other games(though the server runs them fine as it is)

If you’ve been happy with the Evo you could just replace it with a more modern equivalent.

If you look in the obvious places you can get a slightly rough round the edges HP DC7800 SFF (2.33GHz C2D, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD, Vista Business COA) for £70 delivered.

Have you consider a HP ProLiant MicroServer? I think it is much better investment if you have a budget around £100.
Original price is £224, but after £100 HP Cashback, only it's only £124.
Though you might need spend extra £10 to upgrade the memory to 2GB as the standard machine came with 1GB only. Basic hardware spec:- Dual Core 1.3 GHz AMD Athlon II, 1GB RAM, 256 Hard disk.
