Ok so I have made a home server, problem is I have no idea how to configure it. My plans were to stream my music files to my X360 & Noxon iRadio, keep a backup of my PC and connect my printer to allow it to be used by the laptop downstairs.

Spec of the server is nothing spectacular, Chenbro Home server chassis (superb bit of kit BTW), Intel dual Atom mini ITX motherboard, 1gb of DDR2 ram, 80Gb System drive (IDE) and 2 x 500Gb drives (SATAII).

I have a copy of Win XP professional also the evaluation version of Windows Home Server, which would be best to use? Any tips appreciated please.

Never really used home server so can't comment, but XP will be fine I guess, you just wont be able to do the stuff that a server OS can. But for media streaming, printer, file sharing and a backup location, it will work.

WHS = backs up your pc / laptop every day.

Can also provide a "location" (like network attached storage) for your music etc. files that can be accessed by anything on network. Cannot be used as a print server I don't think.

Running WHS here as a print server no probs. :D

I was about to upgrade my pc that acts as a server with 'Home server'. It is currently running XP. T

The 1st thing it asks is

1. Please confirm this is your full list of hard drives and that none are missing.
2. If you continue all drives will be formated and ALL data will be erased.

Ouch.. I had 2tb of data.. And I had to rely on keyboard short-cuts to cancel out...
That was a close one..

I guess 'Home server' is indended to be pre-loaded onto machines; Or for fresh clean installs where no data already exists.

I decided to install Windows 2008 server instead.

RE: Print sharing: I believe Home server is based on Windows Server 2003SP2 which should mean sharing printers comes out of the box..

Theres a nice big short-cut to power off on the front of the computer to ;)

Doesnt the windows home server have the same install interface as vista? In which case you need to do the "advanced" disk options and just format c:
