Okay - excuse the ignorance of this post guys but I'm a total newbee when it comes to this...

I've got an old shuttle pc which I want to turn into NAS. At first I thought the easiest way would simply be to "share" the files I want on my home network. But it would also be cool to be able to remotely access the files on this NAS from anywhere (if possible). Would this be done through FTP?

What would be the best way to do this? I've heard of FreeNAS and looked into it vaguely...is this what I need?

Is there some sort of a tutorial to turn home pc's into servers or something? Or can someone post some sort of a guide?

Thanks so much in advance guys!!

2nd for FreeNAS. It'll also di any RAID etc you may want without expensive adaptors. It's completely web managed so it's really quite easy to set up and manage remotely. It supports SMB for standard shares aswell as FTP and HTTP for getting at files remotely. It's very powerful if not as straight forward and wizard based as WHS. But I've never used it before and an hour or so of fiddling and i had FTP working and was getting to know how it worked.

:confused::confused::confused:

The irony of someone reccomending a several thousand pound OS for home use, who doesnt even know how to post pictures... interesting.

Take a look at Amahi for something that's still 'free' but does a bit more than just a NAS...

Edit: Apologies, it looks like some of it is free, but some features may require a subscription... Still looks quite handy though, could be worth a shot?
