So the plan was for me to wire a 50m cat5e from my homehub in the living room, to my PC.
I was prepared to do this, until i thought of maybe adding a router between.
Would it be possible to have a 50m cat5e running to my room with the PC, then into a router which would transmit a signal, in turn increasing WiFi range and also using an ethernet cable out from the 2nd router into the PC?
Will this cause any extra latency? As i suspect all the extra runnings would effect it.

Change router to switch, plug in a wireless access point for better wireless coverage and also plug the pc into the switch

Any recommendations for switches? Never in my life have i used one. Complete and utter noob at networking btw.

You don't need a separate switch. Your original router idea makes more sense as it'll keep the switch and wireless as single device .

Configure the router as an access point. Many modern routers have this as an option in the GUI. If there isn't a dedicated option then the required steps have been covered many times on this forum.

Don't use the router's WAN port unless the router does have an AP mode and it specifically tells you to use it.

You can then, as you describe, connect it between the long network cable and your PC. It'll have exactly the same performance impact as using a switch, which will be nothing noticeable.
