Hi, I have been running a 5 meter cat5 cable through the living room due to a poor located phone line. To get the phone line moved would cost in excess of £40.

I have read some details about homeplugs and think they would be ideal.

The router is plugged into the main phone line but as above this is over 5 meters away from the pc. At the back of the pc I have a spare plug sckt and also next to the router.

Can you give me any advise on this technology, things to look out for and brands NOT to buy.

Idealy I want second hand off the MM due to cost and have placed an add; but seen some on a well known auction site for £21 inc P&P brand new as below.

DEVOLO HOMEPLUG 85 MPBS BRAND NEW

I only use the pc for my internet this runs currenly at just below 3mb per second (long way from the exchange).

regards

I would look and see if you can't get a cat5 cable installed in a more permanent fashion. For less than the cost of a set of homeplugs I bet you could get someone to run one through the wall. Then you'd have no issue of whether you'd picked a good or bad brand, plus you wouldn't then need to pay for the power to run them.

Just my 2p.

Thanks for the replys, I suppose I could run the current Cat5 cable outside through the wall but the mrs not to keen on me drilling holes and I kinda like the idea of this been simple to just plug in the homeplugs and hey presto.

Been reading up on the different types and speeds and security. I am not after owt flash but something that will offer a solid stable network. The house is only just 10 years old so the wireing is sound and see no problems ther.

Devolo seem to be a well named brand when it comes to homeplugs but as never used tem or to be honest new they existed until a week or two back just after any cons to this technology

Always try to stick to wired network cable where you can, but if this isn't possible then I suppose home plugs are the next best thing before wireless. I have no experience with them personally but will watch this thread with interest :)

not necessary with homeplugs.

I purchased some off the MM last week and have been running flawlessly.
They're only a large Etailer bargain 200mbps set and run amazingly well and getting an excellent signal.

i'm in a different room to my phone line and would have needed a good 20m + cable.

I have a netgear kit at work and mine does 192kbps. It does have a tendancy to drop connection between the 2. But I think this is down to bad new build wiring and when someone turns something on.

Devolo 85Mb kit here, cost ~65 new but I'm about 3 rooms and a corridor away from the router and wireless was rubbish, fixed cable very much out of the question.

Has been working just fine.

Connects at ~40Mbps due to distance, noise etc. I'm about 30m from the router in a direct line (no idea how much wiring) and on a different circuit, working for the last 3 years.

This sounds like the way to go for me then. As long as I get above 3mb and looking at the 85mb kits should easy handle what am looking for.

Like I say the router in in the hall and the PC in the living room distance in a straight line in 5m or even less but going round the skirting boards or having to drill through walls does no appeal to me. Approx double in length (10m) if going round skirting boards.

i got a new pair of the netgear xe104 units (only 85 meg, but with 4 port built-in switches) for £45 delivered from a competitor a couple of months back. works fine, can max out my broadband, and stream stuff to the ps3 without any worries at all.
