Homeplugs or Wireless Bridge?

Hey Everyone,

I wonder if anyone can suggest the best solution for my setup.

I currently have a LAN in my office with a pc/laptop/server running to a gigabit switch, these all co-exist happily without an issue.

Internet access is currently via a wireless router in a different part of the house. At the moment, I have a wireless card in the pc and a wireless dongle in the server to allow them to access the internet.

This is currently causing issues as my pc will jump between the wireless connection and the ethernet connection so I get erratic connection speeds.

I think the best way to fix this, is to unify the connection to the internet router. I can't run an ethernet cable to the router directly, although I realise this would be the perfect solution. So I want to remove the wirelss card and dongle from the pc/server.

Do I setup a wireless bridge connected to the gigabit switch, or use a pair of homeplugs? My internet speed is only 8mb/s down 1mb/s up.

Thanks for all (useful :D) replies,

Andy.

The router is on the right-hand ring main, the office is actually on both ring mains dependant on which socket you use (Strange, eh?). So I could put a homeplug into the same ring main without a problem.

Office first floor, router ground floor.

Straight line, the router is probably 4 meters from the office, through two internal walls and the wireless signal is very good.

The building is probably 30ish years old and last week had the wiring checked, new fuseboard (RCD's) and two wiring faults corrected, so it's in tip top condition now.

Definately homeplugs if you can get them on that same ringmain.
Should get decent speeds, definately enough to just handle the net connection.

Ta, any recommendations? Seems to be a veritable mine field of options for them!

Looks good, unfortunately it would have to be a plug-through type or it would have to be on an extension, which I believe decimates speeds?

Doesn't look like OcUK do them though, but if you had a model number I could google I'd appreciate it! :D

Thanks for all your help 23JMZ07

Edit: The BT Comtrend 200mbs seem like a popular product, would these suit? Thanks!

Was looking at homplugs for a bit one that kept coming up with decent reviews were made by Solwise they have one with a pass through (NET-PL-200AV-PIGGY_MK2) aswell as a powerstrip which has 6 plugs aswell as homplug built in (NET-PLA-AV-3E-PIGGY6) believe they also do a 500mbps and a 1000mbs homeplug. In the end I bought the Western Digital Livewire system as it ended up giving me 4 ports at the other end (AV Setup/consoles) and uses a normal plug and to get past the not using a extension (Its the surge protect that messes it up). I just used a put a 3-way normal adaptor to the socket in the wall and the extension + livewire into that so it didn't go through the surge protection.

Tbh ive never seen a detrimental effect using my netgears on an extension, as long as its not surge protected then its no different from a ring main spur.

The BT comtrends are good. I use them and they're quite nippy. I was using a pair of solwise 85mbps ones which were also very good. The only thing I find annoying about the comtrends as the ethernet port is at the top, I would prefer bottom but then if the plug is sat low it might be a squeeze possibly?

Also, I ahve the one by the router ina surge protected extension and I've also never seen any real detrimental effect.

Fantastic, thank you 23JMZ07, sypher365 and welshdragon for your posts, really helpful and I've now ordered a pair!

No-more network conflicts here I come!

Andy.

Bought a pair of homeplugs, and they work perfectly! A direct connection to the router (even through a pair of these) has improved browsing speeds.

Thanks again to everyone for your help.

Andy.
