I dont know much about homeplugs but a guy at work said he uses them and are great

On my Sky wireless connection I get around 1.3mbps download over wireless. On wired I get 2.2mbps

Would I be able to use a pair of home plugs like these to connect to my Sky router?

Are good/bad makes, different speeds etc

I have a pair and they perform great when they're the main plug taking up a socket. The performance is terrible though when either end is attached to a multi socket extension gang. I've also heard that depending on the age of your house and how it's wired will have an affect on being able to say, plug one into a socket by the phone and have it coming out in a bedroom (as it's something to do with different parts of the house being wired on different circuits) but that's just something I've heard. A spark would probably know better.
 
I used devolo 200mbps ones, they were great almost giving me what I got through wired, until all of a sudden they stopped working for no apparent reason.
 
I used to use them and they were brilliant. It definitely depends on the quality of your house's wiring though. For example old houses with old wiring will have problems. also some properties have the upstairs and downstairs on separate looks so won't work either.

It's a faff but the only way to know is to try them out.
 
We rent the ground floor of a 3 story house. Think the wiring may not be the best

Maybe I should try some from PC world and take them back if they dont work - or even if they do, then get some cheaper ones from the net
 
Yes.

Solwise and Devolo come happily recommended by me. My work have been supplying both to homeworkers for a couple of years with virtually no issues.

They even work fine in my parents 1920's house across 3 floors on 35 year old wiring.

I checked with my landlord and electrics were all new and done a couple of years ago.

If I get the 85mbps ones, will they be hjust as quick with my 20mb sky connection than if I got the 200mbps ones? I take it those or just for home networking, like setting up a LAN
 
Been using some netgear 200mbps ones for the past 3 months, they seem pretty good, get a decent speed through them.
 
we have some as well as using wireless as the Sky router doesn't seem to get everywhere in the house they work pretty well from experience no faster than the wireless tho but the wiring in our house is terrible
 
You'll get full speed off the Internet. If you are using them for local network file copies or media streaming then the 200mpbs versions would be more suitable.
 
I have TP-Link ones (available at OCUK) and get 170Mbit through my house.

I haven't tested actual throughput, but as I've only got 16Mbit internet... I'm pretty confident that I'm at least getting full internets :)
 
The only way the 85Mbps ones wont be suitable is if you are on 100Mb Virgin Media.

If your Internet is only 20Mbps... then you have a lot of headroom.

If you transfer files... you will need to make sure your router is gigabit enabled, otherwise it will be capped at 100Mbps... therefor making the 200Mbps ones useless and pointless.

If you use the Sky router... then it's capped at 100Mbps... so don't bother buying the 200Mbps ones.

They are great if both are plugged into the same ring main and there's no White Goods on that same ring main. Most modern wiring aka 1970s onwards will usually have a ring main per floor plus a separate one for lighting and another appliances. Electrically noisy things like Microwaves can screw them up.

If you have trip switches instead of fuse boxes you should be fine, unless some cowboy did the wiring. Don't expect miracles if they are on different floors.

I use the Develo 200 ones and they are much better quality than some crap Nethear ones I had before. Divide the rated speed by 2 as they are not asynchronous like Ethernet.

I have one plugged into my conservatory anf the other upstairs at the other end of the house. They work perfectly, wouldnt go back to wifi for gaming.
