Homeplugs

Got a set of comtrend 9020 200mbps ones here, (pass through plug models). Cant get them working for love nor money, possibly due to the wiring on one part of the house being quite new, (extension built on).
 
If I want to use another machine connected with a homeplug, do I need 2 more?

One for the pc in the other room and another to connect the router to the mains?

Would having another machine connected to a different mains socket degrade the quality of the existing connection?
 
No, you can add as many as you like with one plug per connection :) I've got three in my house for my PC and the family PC. Works a treat. They shouldn't affect the speeds of each other. Obviously if the two PCs were maxed out there's only so much the one at the router end can take, if that makes sense?
 
Been using these things for years. Have had 5 in total but only 2 left now. The others just broke, stopped working.

Really useful things though, avoids crappy wireless and cables trailing around the house.
 
Probably best to turn them off when not in use, whether or not it was just bad luck or faulty anyway, mine burnt out.

ive noticed they do get pretty hot, but had them on for 4 years constantly probably better to be safe tho
 
Would he need another 2 homeplugs, one next to router and one in his room?

I have one in the front room next to router taking up one of the main sockets, the other now has a 4 way extension gang coming off and another 4 way off that!
 
As long as you have one homeplug connected to your router, you just need 1 for each PC you want to connect, and you can have as many as you like iirc.
Worth noting you can also use homeplugs from different manufacturers, so long as they're the same speeds they will all work together (i.e. don't try and mix 200mbs and 85mbs).
Best invention of recent times IMHO, couldn't believe how well they worked and how little faff was involved when I first got my pair of Devolo. Have added a Solwise (from OCUK) since for my sons 360 and have never had a glitch.
 
If you plan to stream any HD video content in the future stick to 200mbps or above.

Personally use Western Digital Livewire 200Mbps Powerline as it gave me 4 network points at each end where all my av equipment sits (htpc/ps3/xbox, etc).

How would this work? I have a sky router with a net cable going to a homeplug on the wall. This homeplug only has space for one connection

How would I connect a network cable to space 2 on the router? Would it be to another homeplug in the front room, then another in his room?
 
You only need one homeplug with a single connection to your router. All the homeplugs in other rooms share the mains wiring to communicate between each other. They're not paired off - any homeplug can communicate with any other homeplug.

Be aware that it's a shared connection so if one homeplug connected device is streaming an HD movie or transferring a large file then the available bandwidth drops to the other homeplugs.

I would have thought it would need to run of 1,2 or 3

This is the router we have - (Sky standard) Sagem F@ST 2504 V2 Sky Router

No. You just need a single homeplug attached to the router and you then run all the others off that one. Like this.
 
That's correct. The homeplugs talk between themselves over the house wiring. If they need access to other wired/wireless devices or the internet then it goes out to the router via the one plugged into port 4.
 
ok, sweet.

Last question - His machine has no antivirus, firewall or anything and im sure he uses programs like limewire etc on an un-register version of windows.

I take it this will have no impact on my machine as its sharing the same connection? (other than when he downloads)
 
Shouldn't do. It'll be the same as if it was connected directly to the router.

I wouldn't want an unprotected machine full of limewire malware on the same network as mine to be perfectly honest. If the copyright cops come knocking it'll be to the person who's paying for the connection.
 
I have some cheapy 200mb home plugs and they are great for sharing the internet connection with no dropouts like wifi. But two out of four have burnt out in the last two years. They were cheap makes though if I'm honest. I am also able to stream full bluray rips that are on my NAS with no hiccups or stutters. Have just purchased some Belkin 1000Mbps home plugs that I hope are more reliable and less prone to burning out than the cheaper ones I have.
