This is a great move by gearbox who has the IP now. They have basically went to blackbird who has most of the talent from past homeworld games that was developing a hw type game called hardware which looked a lot like homeworld but on ground instead of space tbh, has gone and done the impossible. They have loaned them the IP and gave them a big wad of cash to finish Homeworld: Shipbreakers (formally Hardware: Shipbreakers).

So in essence this basically IS Homeworld 3 now. :)

GET IN!

Also i had a crap opinion of GB but this has gone a long way to fix it. They have done what no other dev or publisher has ever done. Given homeworld a big chance to come back to the fans. I for one approve of this.

One thing tho, i hope they dont get to touch the code. While giving the ip and money to blackbird is great news and all i just hope they leave the team to get on with it and leave it to the pros of RTS gaming and GB stick to borderlands which seems to be the only game there good with. Maybe harsh but after Duke and Aliens who can blame this opinion?

Update 14th Jan.
Gameplay videos have now been released.

Homeworld was an awesome game, I'll definitely pick up the HD versions if they bring them out. I hope this successor is half as good as the first one (never played the second game as I didn't have a PC when it came out).

This is the first I'd heard of this game, anyone been following it? Is it going to suck or does it have the potential to be a proper Homeworld game?

It looks and sounds like a hw game just on ground. I duno about specifics but it was gona be a kinda mmo i think but that might change now.

Regardless rob cunningham the art guy who made hw look the way it did is at blackbird, as well as other core team. I think some of the voices from hw1 are in the team or they have access to them so another good thing there. Tbh even tho its ground i still would play it as it looks and feels so homeworld like. If they can get a space section on now with the additional funding then great. If not i hope they allow modding and dont hardcode it so its impossible to add in a space aspect to it.

If this is susscessful it could open up to a proper space based hw3 in a few years time. :)

I have a strange feeling after this games out gb might absorb them to be their rts arm of developers. I hope not tho it be nice to have them seperate but work together on hw games.

Edit - Added a link to OP for the developers website.

Calling this Homeworld 3 in the title is very misleading, you should change it :p ..... Shipbreakers has been in the news for months as "Hardware: Shipbreakers". Its a different type of RTS game to the original Homeworld games, the common thing between Shipbreakers and HW is the art style and the development team behind Shipbreakers used to work on Homeworld.

So in essence this basically IS Homeworld 3 now. :)

No .... the guys at Gearbox are lending the Homeworld title to Blackbird Interactive which is the big news. Shipbreakers is currently not a continuation of the events in HW1 & HW2 but Blackbird may retconn it back into the Homeworld universe if they choose to.

Well its a homeworld game now so u could say it could be "considered" hw3. Hell its the closest we fans have ever gotten to hw3 news.

Since gb gave the ip and cash injection to BBI they have changed the game there making in a few ways. Its going retail instead of f2p. They changed the name and probably the lore and races etc in now to how they probably really wanted to do but couldnt as they didnt have the ip at the time. Plus probably more changes we will see as time goes by to go more towards a hw universe game.

Meh picky arnt we. :) Ok then its the third homeworld game if u dont count cata as it was technically a standalone game if i remember the history.

Anyhow i did say in the title "well kinda". So. :)

Anyhow lets not squable over that lets just be happy its officially homeworld now and that hopefully it will transform more into a hw game as time goes by due to the ip and cash they got.

Gearbox getting their hands on this worries me + Randy Pitchford.
The whole process has been bizzare, people have paid for it like kickstarter without knowing anything about the game, they get interviewed tons but never give any actual information. I'm very skeptical about what they're trying to push.

I smell f2p cashshop wannabe-sub mmo.

As much as I really love homeworld, prove me wrong gearbox.

Its now a retail game and no longer planned for f2p. Also not a mmo i believe.

A ground rts game by the devs of homeworld fame that recently changed from a none homeworld titled game to a homeworld titled game due to gearbox. Or did you mean you were confused with something else?

Well, take note I said it was "wannabe sub-mmo" in that reviews I read mentioned it was trying to be on a massive scale, but my impression is that the only massive thing about it was how many people played it, not how many people were playing in the same world together :P

Is it really going retail because the site still says F2P?

They're not the ones making the game

Hahah, do you realise how ironic that sounds? There's so much bs surrounding a few games that they apparently "didn't make".
Let's see how it goes though :D

It just doesn't seem Homeworldy to me.

But if its just an offshoot, i suppose it's good.
