I've got my eye on this tv

http://www.sony.co.uk/product/tv-107-42-lcd/kdl-42w805a/technical-specifications

I want to use it for films and games via my pc which has a Radeon 6950. I want games to run at 1080p, 60fps. Will it do this over 1 hdmi cable and will it carry sound too or is something else needed?
I also gather this model can do 100/120hz native. Does this mean i could get up to 100/120 fps assuming my pc is powerful enough?

Looks like you'll be able to do 1080p/60 over HDMI

You'll not get 120Hz out of it though - the panel might work at this refresh rate, but the electronics behind it will only allow 60Hz.

My HTPC has a 6950 in it, which is hooked up via HDMI. I've not got sound via HDMI, though, as I have an optical cable into my AV receiver so that I can get 5.1 sound (my AV receiver is too old for HDMI)

Have my PC hooked up to my Panasonic LED TV via hdmi which defaults at 50Hz but will do 60Hz

Use PC to watch all my TV and movies only thing i never do is gaming on it

What does this look like I'm currently on 23" panel and was thinking of hooking the PC up to the 40" plasma will it work? Want to do it just for playing fifa haha

Would then put laptop where the desktop is

depends on a few things;

input lagg
image retention of static images

but for gaming on a PC usually a PC monitor is far superior to most tv's because PC's can output high frame rates and most tv's max out at 60hz.

the only reason I hook up my 50" plasma to my pc is to watch movies and tv shows on it. no gaming use what so ever.

Have you thought about a Media player like the WD TV Live, apple tv etc?

No because I can't use them for games as far as I know.

Just to point out am 100% sure that TV is 60hz only with frame interpolation, meaning post processing 400hz.

It would at the very least be 60hz native, the 400hz figure is the interpolated one. As it would add input lag I would only use it for watching the footy.

Thanks lads, I pulled the trigger on it and await delivery on tuesday. My only concern is if I get a good unit or have to play the panel lottery game with John lewis.
