Considering buying some but I'm not sure if the noise will end up irritating me, I've watched some youtube videos but it's hard to guage.

What are people's thoughts?

I have a Novatec disc hub and the noise is ridiculous. From what I've heard, Hope are slightly louder still. With the Novatec I don't need a bell as simply stopping peddling gives people about a mile away warning that you're there. It's kind of handy, though I sometimes feel like I must annoy people in front of me if I freewheel for a moment instead of overtaking them.

Personally when buying a new rear hub, a good loud crisp click is a must. Ah quality hub without just wouldn't be right.
You will find most, not all but most, high quality rear free hub mechanisms are quite loud with varying levels/noises. Hope tend to be on the louder scale, but can be made a bit quieter with a generous helping of reasonably thick grease, this will not last forever though and will require repacking regularly to keep quiet.

I don't have a Hope hub at the moment but my Mavic one is pretty loud. I find it handy, coming up behind someone it's a way of letting them know you're there without having to shout (or without having to be extra super cool and having a bell).

Plus you can imagine yourself riding the trail with a swarm of angry insects for company.

And it means you don't need clickety-clacks or spokey-dokeys. Win.

I love a near-silent freewheel. I don't think I'd be able to live with the noise from Campagnolo freewheels for example. Way too loud - it just sounds like energy being wasted to me. Hope ones are probably no different.

Had hope hubs and after a bit you tune out to the noise but it's very useful for people to hear you coming!

My road bike also has "noisey" hubs - DT swiss - no issues for me.

I was surprised by the noise from my campy Khamsin's but now I've got used to them I like it. Certainly nowhere near as loud as some!

Click click click means that you're not pedaling hard enough :p

This!

I don't generally coast along, always telling myself to pedal, even on descents! If I spin out or really tuck I will... Love going past a wall or house then for the echoes! ;)

I was recently in a group with one member running Hope hubs. The noise produced by the rear hub was too loud in my opinion and was a right pain when there was a lot of freewheeling caused from being in a group.

I have had Campagnolo wheels and now have Fulcrum, which have a good balance of clicky noise against volume level in my opinion.

Hope always seem OTT but they do sound awesome. My Novatec rear hub on my new road wheels is very loud along with the carbon rim echo :D But nothing beats the whoosh noise of my disc wheel!

I could definitely live with it!

I couldn't cope with the noise on a road bike but have Hope wheels on my mountain bikes. As mentioned above people at least hear you coming.

my hub is really noisy and it's great.

your pedalling so won't hear it constantly, you won't need a bell for going past dog walkers etc on trails just stop pedalling as you approach
