Horrible frame rate drops in games

I have an odd problem thats arisen recently and hoped someone on here may know what it is about. A couple of months back my PC shut itself off at some point while I was out, and wouldnt POST when I tried to start it again. All power was on but no signal was getting sent to the screen. I reset the CMOS and it came on with the usual "BIOS defaults loaded del to enter setup, F1 to continue" message. I set everything how I had it before in the BIOS (mainly defaults, little bit of an overclock, stuff I dont need disabled), and restarted. The thing then POST'ed, but it hung on windows loading for about 5 minutes. I thought it was dead but eventually it did boot XP and seemed OK, except it wouldnt clock to 2.4ghz like I had it running 24/7 before, and maxed out about 2.3ghz. I reinstalled XP then installed Bioshock for the first time (Bought it on release day, been looking forward to it for bloody ages), and when I ran it it was OK for a couple of minutes then the frame rate dropped really badly. I assumed it was my PC not being up to the job and tried some other games. It did the exact same thing in FEAR and Counterstrike Source. The only game it hasnt done it with is GTA San Andreas. Everything in startup is disabled from msconfig, and I have the latest video drivers. This is doing my head in and I cant afford to upgrade right now, so if anyone knows what could cause all this upset please let me know!

Specs are:
Opteron 146 (now at 2.3ghz)
Abit AN8 SLI
2gb Geil Value PC3200 (dual channel mode)
Aopen 7800GTX 256mb
Hiperpower 560W
Maxtor diamondmax 120gb SATA

Thanks, George.

The only thing i can think it might be is the motherboard having a whinge.

Otherwise it might be the PSU having problems, how long have u had it?

PSU is about a year and a half old I reckon. In the abit monitoring program it looks ok, the furthest out voltage being the 12v moving between 12v and 12.5v

I wondered the same thing memory, but the CPU is about 30°c idle 40°c load. Also I disabled Cool n Quiet in the BIOS so I dont think its throttling. Im run out of ideas to be honest. Plus my 360 is dead so now I have no way of playing games

Sounds motherboard-esque problems, but I would check GPU temps as the large FPS drops in games might be a seperate issue.

Sounds like throttling due to overheating to me. What are you using to monitor the temps. Personally i would reseat my CPU cooler with AS5 & then do my GFX cooler as well.
