Horrible whining noise and severe loss of power? Argh!

It's done 63,000 miles it had done 55,000 when I bought it and it was serviced along with cambelt, pump, tensioner just before I bought it by the dealer I bought it from on a long life service.

Its done less than 10,000 miles since you bought it and VW claim it needs ANOTHER cam belt change at £660? So who's bending you over, the place you bought it from or VW.

The VW invoice says the service book is missing, so they've probably just added the cambelt change as they won't have a record of the previous one.

Going to get it home and VAG-COM it first to check for codes and then get an indy to take the Turbo off for me, spoke to someone who will come to me, then I'll get midland turbos to recon my turbo and get matey back to put it back on I think. Or borrow his ramps and save on the labour costs.

Does the turbo immediately start making siren noises and develop no boost at any point, or does it work for a short while after starting the car and then cut out?

Seem ridiculously low mileage to fail unless it was abused before you got it, or it has ingested something.

Going by the quote from VW the engine had a very low oil level which likely ran the bearings dry in the turbo killing it.

Disgusting isn't it.

What's more it they all clear the windows just fine lol

I'd side with VW, since your idea of car maintenance and safety differs slightly to what mine does ;)

Apart from the wishbone play which is down to personal opinion and is probably fine and the wiper price being expensive.

Everything else on that list is pretty critical and shouldn't be ignored!

The oil went low after I drove it with the turbo faulty.

...and despite what they said it's not empty it's near minimum on the gap you measure it with so low, but not empty.

The oil was checked just after the turbo went before I'd driven it and it was fine. The light hasn't come on even now.

The light is for low oil pressure, not low oil level.

If it comes on, then your engine is more than likely to be ******.

Do you have the model number for the turbo? I just googled it when I had a turbo go 3 years ago and got a new one from Borg Worner delivered in 2 days for £500 (this was cheaper than reconditioning it with anyone), sold the old one to a refurb place(spindle had gone). The indie will be able to tell you if you need to worry about the intercooler once he has the turbo off, if anything's missing then you'll need it drained and checked at least.

All VAG garages I have been to have given wildly out estimates for brake pad wear (between services I went from 70% wear to 30% recently), unless you have a sensor I would assume they are lying. The cheapest I could find on the internet for the ABS would be this place who overhaul the unit for £250 http://www.ecutesting.com/vw_golf_touran_abs_pump_module.html , i have no idea if they know what they are doing (hell you can find kits on ebay), was just looking for the cheapest.

I'm currently considering http://www.sinspeed.co.uk/ for the ABS issue, they said they can come get the car and bring it back sorted for £315 or £250 for a new unit. Both with a lifetime warranty.

Turns out they do turbo refurbs as well and will cost between £250 and £450 depending on which model I have, I'm trying to get the part numbers from VW at the moment.

Pita

VW say they aren't allowed to give me the part number for my own turbo.

Got a quote from them and it just says:

W03G 253 014 FX N/STK EXMANTURBO £730.63

Unlucky mate, I've just been quoted £500 to do the following on a VW tdi -

Cambelt kit, waterpump
Full service with all filters and fluids changed incl gearbox oil and coolant
Front left wheel bearing.
Front Right CV Joint.

VW are having a laugh with £45 to change a wiper blade, I hope you pointed that much out to them! :)

Try www.ukmkivs.net they may be able to help you with your turbo selection.

First thing of car ownership, never take your car to the stealer's unless for warranty work.
