We seem to be back to perpetuating this idea that's it's all the fault of the Water Companies, and that leaking pipes/massive profits are the be-all and end-all of the issue.
Yes, Water Companies are out to make a profit and often put Shareholders first. This sucks, but you are living in a capitalist democracy - why act so outraged and suprised?
The Usage Restrictions and Hosepipe Bans are introduced to protect us from actually running out of water completely, and hopefully make us more aware of the imapct we are having on our environment. Unfortuantely, most people would rather deny any personal responsibility for the problem, and point the finger at leaking pipes.
Have you any idea how difficult it is to spot a leaking pipe? How are you meant to detect these things? Because the local reservoir empties a little bit faster than normal? And fixing a leak isn't merely a matter of wrapping a band-aid around a stand-pipe either. We're talking road closures and planning permission, as well as stopping the customers' entire supply while the repairs take place.
The Water Companies can improve on their wastage, but unless there is a change in attitude from the public this problem will never be solved - even if every leaking pipe were fixed. Too many people taking a limited resource for granted - that is the bigger problem.
Rant, rant, rant etc. Get used to the idea that the country you live in doesn't have an infinite supply of the wet stuff. Oh, and yes, I
do work for a water company.
