Hi,

Is it possible to set hosts files to block all websites but then add in exceptions for updates, company websites etc?

Doing this at the server and router level is a massive amount of work here due to the setup.

Any other options?

use a proxy and then do a whitelist?

Messing with hosts files is not the best way to do things, especially if you're in a domain.

They don't have a domain setup, 98% of them are running Win 7 Home with a couple running Ubuntu.

It's all new to me, but group policies / active directories won't work.
OPENDNS won't work without paying (which they are unlikely to do)
The Vigor3900 server doesn't seem to take Firewall settings even when set but I still couldn't set the wifi router to white/blacklist

I have considered that, just need to figure out if it can work. For now I've got an OpenDNS account working on the wired network, temp solution.

Can do this with something like ClearOS (its free).

Having to roll out Hosts files to other peoples laptops and desktops (running Home?) sounds like a recipe for pain.

Configure it up as a gateway, load the Proxy on it, configure one device to use it as a gateway, test it.
When happy put it in the DHCP as your default gateway.

(Remember to make a note of all the things you change so you change them back when something is PeteTong).
