Before anyone says, I've read a lot of ocukhostreview already and I'm after some more specific info.

I've set up on my desktop the php and mysql photo album gallery2. Really like it overall and have over 1000 of my photos in it. I'm obviously hosting this so it's crippled by my poor upload speed and god forbid I try to download something from biittorrent.

So what I'm after is something in the cheaper range of hosting but with plenty of space, i.e. currently 1GB but potential when I host my families pics of being up to 5GB say.

I am also not interested in dropping image quality as I would like people to be able to print pics.

So any hosting suggestions or perhaps ways to achieve the same result? I don't really mind hosting the site it's just the bandwidth that is the issue.

For this you'll need lots of disk space but less bandwidth (as most people won't look through to the high-res versions), though lots of bandwidth is of course a plus. You'll also need the ability to have a custom plan probably, unless you find one which fits your needs and your projected needs, or you want to start paying the high overusage fees if you exceed your quota.

'tis worth contacting the various hosts and seeing what's what :)

As for ways to achieve the same result, you could store the high-res versions on your home PC and direct the high-res downloads to your PC via some nifty mod_rewrite work, or you could store only the small thumbnails on your PC, etc. Probably not very workable, but it is a solution if you're on a strict budget.

You could also sign up for a hundred accounts on my uploader, though I think I might notice :p

I know this seems ridiculous but was hoping for the £2-3 per month range. As Beansprout surmised I'm after cheap and cheerful with disk space rather than bandwidth.

Are there any US ones that fit the bill? As I mentioned, any proper hosting is going to be better than my home hosting can provide.

Given in hosting Diskspace is a finite resource, it tends to cost the most, especially as it equally means an increase in backup space also.

for £20-30 a yr, you're playing with fire if you find someone to provide 5GB of Disk storage space...

Enjoy!

Again backup wouldn't really be required as I'd certainly have all the photos at home and possibly keep a home copy of the whole gallery. Likewise, availability is not a problem. If my family can't get to view the albums for a couple of days due to the hosting being down, no great loss.

What are other people doing for galleries? I'd really rather not scrimp on which photographs go online as what I find boring my parents might find fascinating etc.

I am sure your host would still backup your data as a matter of course, so it would still take up a chunk of their space.

You say you dont want to scrimp, but then say that you want to spend £20...

I used it in an entirely different context.

I want quantity rather than quality from a service, I know that's not the norm but it actually suits my requirements to a tee.

You might want to have a look at DreamHost and Site5 as US providors. I believe there's a DreamHost offer going on at the moment whereby you get money off if you are referred by someone (and it's not hard to find referrers because they cash in at the same time).

Take bandwidth and storage figures with a pinch of salt though; these companies can only afford to offer those kind of plans on the basis that 99% of their customers don't use 1% of their allotted resources. ;)

For £2/£3 per month...you get what you pay for

Dreamhost and Site5 both have insane plans at the moment, like 20 GB Disk, 1 TB Transfer for $7.95/mo. Madness!

And they're decent companies, not fly by night kiddies.

One thing to watch for is that Dreamhost limit the CPU time (and I guess Site5 do too, but I haven't checked), however you should be fine with this if it's mainly a storage site. Gallery2 is a bit of a beast, but that'd only be a problem if you have lots of people hitting it.

Just in case anyone wants the same, I went for Dreamhost in the end.

I used promo code "whcoupons" which got me 20GB disk 1TB transfer (AS IF!!!), 1 free .com registration for a year, unlimited mysql, domains, emails blah blah.

All for the bargain price of $93 for two years or around £55 to you and I.

£2.29 per month, going to host (resell) 2 x 2GB chunks out to work colleagues for a £1 a month each which is a bargain for them and I get hosting for 29p per month.

For the next 2 years anyway. :)

I'm not sure how gallery2 will perform in a CPU limited environment though.

Badly, one would imagine. It's a very CPU intensive application.

At the end of the day, you get what you pay for. If the site is not of critical importance and you really don't want to spend much, just go for the cheapest package you can find and keep a local copy of all of your data :).

That's it, I always have all my photos in two or three places, just wanted to share them with family.

I've not got it all set up yet but for a single user at a time (can't ever see it being more than one concurrent) it should be fine with CPU limits. Especially as it's the gallery software they provide by default.
