Hi Guys

We are pleased to announce stock of the fantastic Edimax EW-7438RPN

This cool little device is a brilliant WiFi extender. Out of the box, the device plugs into the wall socket and takes a few seconds to set up. switch it on and you get connected immediately. A sleek web interface links the extender to your routers WiFi signal and away you go.

I noticed superior performance on WiFi but the unit has the bonus of an ethernet port as well meaning that a nearby games consoles or PCs can be plugged into the unit and it detects it as an Ethernet connection. For recent systems with intel controllers, it is a great idea as it means you can use your network port and don't need an additional wireless adapter.

The range extender has proven to be exceptional giving brilliant coverage in the upper floor of my house.

I fully recommend this as a decent alternative to powerline.

how effective is this at boosting a wireless signal from upstairs to downstairs in a 5 bedroom house (for example).

The dead spot seems to be diagonally from bedroom to living room, and if this were to be placed in the center of the house, would this solve out wireless issue?

Also if not compatible/not working can it be returned?

Hey mate,

You can return any item under DSR, which would cover you in this instance. OCUK are very good with returns - though I'm sure someone will confirm this shortly!

I have just ordered this for work. We can get free wifi but it is at 1 bar so hopefully this can boost the signal to more bearable levels.
How easy would this be to set up? Does it just boost any signal or do you have to enter the passwords and stuff into it?

Presumably you would run the setup software, it searches for the available wireless networks and then you login to it with the WEP/WPA password, it then works to extend that signal..?

Just guessing.. :D

you plug it in and connect to it. you enter the web interface which tracks available networks. select the network you want then enter any security key and it will take about a minute to pair with it.

then it just works.

erm .. would this boost a wifi signal 2 doors down to my sis house ? :D

probably not. WiFi is effected by walls so it would depend on the distance and thickness and materials. I cant see why not, but its certainly not within my place to say yes as I dont have the full details

in theory though yes it could work.

Hi everyone. Another good feature of these extenders is that they can repeat multiple units off each other. So you can have a max of 5 repeaters working as one network and set the SSID to be the same across the entire network. Basically as a WDS network. Thanks and we hope you enjoy them :)

you can connect your pc to this using an ethernet cable yes.

it works like a really strong signal wifi dongle if that makes sense.

To Mumbo...
This device will allow you to repeat from a current WiFi signal. You can use the Ethernet port to connect it to something like a console, PC, laptop or any other Ethernet device and it acts like a wireless bridge. When it is connected via the Ethernet cable it acts as a Client device a lot like a USB Wifi dongle does. If you don't have a Wifi 'Internet Source' then you'll need an Access Point to send out a wireless signal from the router and then this device can repeat that signal further. I hope this helps.

This is exactly what I need to sort out streaming HD content to my PS3 (since they still use B/G). Wouldn't have seen the thread if you hadn't bumped it :p

that is the one thing I have noticed it is brilliant for.

streaming on the PS3 is terrible for me, so this is a real option.

PS3 and Xbox consoles both work 100% on these units. Perfect for HD streaming but I would say to connect with the Ethernet cable in to the console for that.

That's my intent. As I mentioned B/G earlier, it just isn't fit for streaming HD content even with an N range booster beside the device (the problem is the PS3). So the ethernet connection this plug has suits my need perfectly.

Looks like a great piece of kit, I have used Edimax wireless adapters in the past and they have always been superb so this is a great addition to their product range.
