Just a quicky for the travellers of OcUK, just wondering which hotels are relatively cheap, but well located within Amsterdam?

Tales of your experiences are most welcome :)

I'm off to Amsterdam for the weekend soon. Gimme some ideas of the "must do" things please :)
I can pretty much guess what 90% of members are going to say

been to amsterdam 6 times - most times have stayed at the flying pig hostel - cracking place www.flyingpig.nl ( downtown hostel ) great fun nice people.

Things to do in amsterdam

the obvious - go to the nearest coffee shop :)

Banana bar if you want some tasty ladies about as you drink

red light district just for the views ( dont take a camera )

wouldnt bother visiting the sex museum its poor ( although i think theres 2 )

things not to do - Dont have a bag of mushrooms and ride to the zoo - although i can reccomend hiring bikes.

also try the smaller hidden away coffee shops - usually a lot nice places than the "touristy" ones

what's your definition of "relatively cheap" ?

I normally use www.bookings.nl to make the bookings
Well i'm no cheapskate, but due to us probably not spending a huge amount of time in the hotel I see no real reason for it to be anything more than basic accomodation.

That said, I don't want it to be a dive either!

I have stayed here twice and it was basic but we didn't mind roughing it. Right in the middle of the red light district.

You will get lost in the red light district, it is a maze, but this hotel has red shelters overhanging the windows which made it a little easier to spot.

My brother said they were all absolute munters in there

yes they are all 35/40+ yr old saggy old women

got dragged in there by some mates and it cost 45 euros for one hour IIRC, total and utter waste of time and money

avoid it at all costs, spent the £ on some fresh green

highly recommend that you try the space cakes, will save your lungs a bit :)

When I was there I stayed in the single hotel was cheap and clean.
And the staff are really laid back couldn't care less when we bounced in at all mad hours in the morning.

I went to the banana bar and yeah most of the girls were munters but its worth going in for a postcard :D

The victoria I think it's called (hey, was a hazy week.. :D) is a very nice hotel. Friendly staff, some fit barmaids, nice rooms plus you can play around with the TV box for free porn which is sweet.

Things to do? Lots and lots.

NO DRUGS TALK

Red light district :D Like someone else said, no cameras! You've obviously got the sex shops near them too which are worth checking out. Some very funny yet disturbing things in those places...

Wake up, have a few drinks and see where the day takes you. Amsterdam is brilliant like that. You can find yourself walking around the red light district for hours off your trolley lauging at the brasses.

Btw, I found the clubs over there awful. Nice atomsphere but some terrible, terrible music. Some are owned by local gangs so keep an eye out for that.

That's the hotel we looked at booking today, although I don't need the fit barmaids ;)

Sex shops may be worth a sniff, not sure on the actual "services" of the Red Light District though ;)

Thats a shame, I heard there are some good clubs, and Sally really wanted to go to a few, I hope they aren't all bad.
