As thread title suggests...

I tried logging on to MSN last night, and it wouldn't let me, and i tried getting into Hotmail normally and it wouldn't let me. I just assumed services were down or something...

Checked again this morning to find i still had no luck.
Checked my work email, which is also on hotmail, to find it was working fine :(

I used the link option to access my main account, which worked ok. I went to the password changing screen to see that someone called Mr Asergaya was the holder of the email account, and obviously, he must have changed my password to his own, so i had no luck with changing it back

I also saw that i had some emails from eBay, stating the changing of some passwords... im guessing he somehow got into my hotmail account through eBay (i've had issues before, and stopped using eBay because of it, but hadn't physically closed my account).

Contacted Hotmail people via the help pages, described my problem in detail, i received a lovely "personal" email stating "If you have forgotten your password, this is what you should do..."

Replied to that one stating its not a forgotten password etc, yet to hear back. Worried as it took them 4 hours just to send that email...

Any recommendations, im concerned as the account i've used for about 6-7 years and all my product registrations and support are registered to that account, as well as personal emails etc.

Will it be fixed? Anyone else had this happen?

Sorry for the long post, just feeling a bit "invaded" :(

No, but have done it to my mates.

Guessed the secret question his hotmail has been in japanese since he was 14! :D

Id run a few spyware/ antivirus programs to see if you have a key logger installed. I'm not an expert so i don't know if these will pick a key logger up but its a good place to start.

Have you received any emails recently asking for your account details?.

Yeah i've run about 4 different software's, nothing comes up.

And i never open dodgy emails, or any kind of links etc, im not that stupid!

People throw around the word "hacked" too freely, theres no chance someone hacked into msn and data mined your username password, whats happened is you have gone on one to many porn sites and got a key logger and failed at using antivirus software. Or someone you know has guessed your secret answer.

Yes of course, that's exactly it, how silly of me

You been phish'd. Royally.

Go to as many "personal" sites as you can and try and change your details, thus untying them from the hotmail account, then go get a gmail account.

Gotta agree with the posts already made... it's most likely either your password (or your secret question) has been guessed, or your PC has been compromised.

my old hotmail account is spam free, but then again i didnt sign up to porn sites or other stupid sites that would send my email address to spammers anyway.

Hmmm,

Basically, i'll reiterate.

My eBay account was hacked, they got my details such as my email address etc from that, they then somehow accessed my hotmail account, which has a different password. I haven't used my eBay account since about april time. I don't know how they got into hotmail from that, but it seems a bit coincidental, that i found (when i linked from my other account), my work ( aka job searching better sounding email address) eBay messages saying about password recovery, which is the result of the guy using my eBay account to change the password to something of his choosing. How he got my hotmail password i DO.NOT.KNOW.

The people who have suggested things such as dodgy links, forms are wrong, as i haven't gone on any disreputable sites, i use my favourites only, which are all well known, popular sites. I use NOD32, update it everyday, scan every day. I use Real-time protection. This is why im posting, as im stumped as to what it can be. Please don't treat me as an imbecile, who does anything and everything wrong to get viruses etc.

If you have or had a shared computer it can be easy for someone to access your email ,as I did with my ex a few years ago !
I use to read her emails from friends then delete them before she read them along with her contacts :o
Nasty really but I was upset when she dumped me for her ex !

are you sure the ebay and hotmail thing are related? maybe some1 person just tried to use the ebay recover password thing and typed in your account name by mistake, which sent the ebay email to your email. As for hotmail, maybe he just had enough info to use hotmails 'forgot password' feature

Do you think it'd be safe to continue using the email address once the problem is resolved, or should i abandon ship?

Why is everyone saying Gmail, whats so much better about it then?

I don't think anyone is actually treating you as an imbecile.
The point they are trying to make is that your Hotmail account was not hacked.
The only way into a Hotmail account is via the password or via the security question.
So somebody needed to know one or the other - no hacking required.

Even if your EBay account was "hacked" and they got your e-mail address, without the password they cannot get in.

Despite your protests about how you never visit dodgy sites etc there is no way anyone could have accessed your account without the password.
So unless you were using a password that was nice and easy to guess then somebody must have known it.

You seem to think that somebody magically broke into your account - this cannot be true.
Your password or password recovery answer has been compromised.
