Let's face it, in recent times Liverpool have become pretty boring to watch - no width, players playing out of position (Heskey is a perfect left winger with that physique, and such amazing ball control too!) and only 1 tactic - short passes to Steven Gerrard who then hoofs (albeit an elegant hoof more often than not) it upfield for Owen to run onto - which has been sussed out by most defences long ago. If they were getting good results, this might be forgivable, but I don't think many Liverpool fans can take dull, poor football AND sub-par results. Liverpool were considered part of the big 3 along with arsenal and man utd until recently, or at least the big 6 coupled with newcastle, chelsea and leeds. To be honest, in the last few months they havent looked much better than the chasing pack like spurs, saints, everton etc.
These poor results and boring football are compounded by the exasperating team selections and tinkering with the lineup. Whether or not you play well seems to have no bearing at all on whether Houllier picks you for the next match - Baros being a case in point. I bet he's the kind of guy who sits down to a meal, and then spends most of his time delicately cutting it up, pushing it around the plate adding sauces etc whilst rarely actually shoving some of the food in his gob. Quite why he goes out and spends bundles of cash on central players like diouf, diao etc when those positions were overloaded with talent in the first place (owen-baros-litmanen, hamaan-gerrard-murphy), meanwhile neglecting to buy any wingers is beyond me. Pushing Riise into midfield helps things on the left, but only if he would pick somebody at left back who could actually defend or manage more than Traore's 5% passing accuracy.
Say what you like about George Graham and his tactics, but It would still be more interesting to watch with him at the helm than Houllier. At least early 90s arsenal played with some width from the likes of Limpar and Merson. And you would be damn sure the defence would be well marshalled, used to playing with each other and not giving away sloppy goals.
