Hi,

Looking at buying a house in the beggarwood area of basingstoke currently the exchange for broadband is:

http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/THDM

I was wondering if anyone could basically tell me is this going to get any decent broadband coverage in the near future, according to the bt website it says:

Exchange Name: DUMMER
Status: Coming Soon
Forecast date: March 2014

Does that mean it'll be live from March 2014 if all stays to plan or is that when the process of working on the exchange starts?

Looking at completing Mid january going from 100mb virgin -1mb BT is going to be a shock to the system.

Thanks for your help.

Just an FYI - any time the checker shows a date of March, June, September or December it is just a holding date and means there is no set date to upgrade that exchange yet..

Cheers for the link, by the looks of it i'll be suffering for a while:

Availability Date
WBC ADSL 2+ Up to 1 -- 1 to 3.5 31-Mar-14
ADSL Max Up to 1 -- 0.75 to 2.5 Available
Fixed Rate 0.5 -- -- Available

Could you not look at some of the 3G/4G wireless options in the area? Surely you'd get better speeds than that, baring all the usual issues with wirelss v wired. Arrange a viewing of the place and do a speed test from your phone in various rooms. Might give an idea of what to expect?

As an aside and as someone who's just about to move to a new place I really do think it's about time estate agents started using this in adverts. Surely for enough people it is now a major enough factor in their lives, multiple devices now connected rather than just the one PC of old and the need to work from home etc, that this kind of info could help make the difference between liking it or not?

I know those of us on places like this know where to go for the info but surely listing the available suppliers and some idea of expected speeds, even just a speedtest from the current occupier, could help differentiate enough to make a difference for a forward thinking estate agent?

Agree, sod the EPC rubbish which varies anyway (I've seen the same property vary from 46 to 77 with no work done depending on who carried out the survey), broadband speed many would find more interesting.
I recently moved into a brand new home (rental) just up the road from where I was previously staying, no more then 1/4 a mile. As it's also nearer to a main road I expected I would at least get the same but no I now get roughly 3/8ths of the speed I was getting before (2 instead of 7!). And that's with BT putting in all the wiring as it's a new line.

Yeah looked into the 3G/4G route but couldn't really find anything other than 3 that where offering 50gb for £50 pcm. There was a good 3g signal there.

You're both right forget all the energy savings and look into the tech hungry culture we all live on, funny was talking to the misses about it last night and i was saying its going to be worse than downloading on you're mobile.

I just hope with it being a new build that the cables only being 10yrs old are generally of decent quality. The exchange i can only assume is getting fibre upgrade to it, but being a distance from it the strength will dip a lot.

There is NO WAY I would buy a house with very poor internet. I just wouldn't be happy there no matter how good the house is.
