A house near me has CCTV cameras mounted on the wall facing (and I presume recording) the street outside. I can understand recording the garden etc but the focus of two of the cameras is the pavement/public highway.

Are they allowed to do this? There are no signs up either. I only bring this up as a neighbour was in the process of clearing the alleyway and got a volley of abuse from them, followed by a visit from the police (no need for details but it left us all ) - they're obviously a bit nuts/paranoid.

You can legally video tape in a public place, thats how programs like Road Wars get away with it. Why does it bother you if they're recording anyway? have YOU got something to hide?

Hmmm, they are hiding something/someone? I'd look further into why they are so very suspicious of everyone.

I don't really care for wars of attrition but the fact that they are so abrasive and the locals are uncomfortable with being recorded as they walk down their own street has made a bunch of us want to find out what can be done to stop it. Not sure if the police would be bothered.

As for having something to hide, no we don't, but it's just odd and makes the place look like it's some sort of ghetto, which it's not. I'd rather not be recorded going about my daily business by someone who has no reason to.

I'm going to get CCTV and shame people who let their dogs have a "doo doo" in front of my house, it's bloody disgusting!!!

Uncomfortable been recorded for a whole of a few yards?
Everywhere you walk these days there's cameras picking you up and filming you.
Apart from the neighbours been abrasive i cant really see a problem here.

Police wont be interested unless you can prove their up to no good with the filming, as stated above filming public areas is fine.
Do they not have cars parked on the street that they want to keep an eye on? or can you actually be sure they are filming what you think?

Their car is parked on the drive. It just seems unnecessary and odd to film the street. Maybe we should all start doing the 4-Lions "Anti-Surveillance" technique as we walk past. :D

One of our neighbours placed CCTV cameras on his house pointed in different directions.

We where always suspicious of him, a month later his house got raided by the police and turns out he was a drug dealer and was involved in human trafficking etc.

We got a camera covering our garden and the street the cars parked on. Police have no issues and its basically unless your pointing it into someone's window directly totally legal.
So far caught several vandals and the neighbours damaging others cars. But then we did give all neighbours a letter and a login for the network camera if they wished.

Look at it like this,

1. They're either up to no good, like growing weed or something

2. They're VERY bothered about security

What I don't get is, like someone above said, why does it bother you being recorded? I have a camera pointing at me right now as I type this, and I have no issue with it (although I should probably be working lol)

And maybe removing the hand from your pants? :p

I think id prefer it if someone around me had put a few up facing the street, at least if anything did happen i could always ask them to check.
Now if it was pointing into your garden too id have issues with that! Although im sure there is hot girl next door in our new place....roll on CCTV and summer time! :p ( I kid clearly)

I've been thinking of doing the same thing, monitoring up my street because someone with a HUGE dog (judging by the size of the poo) is simply letting it go anywhere along the pavement and leaving it there, it's utterly disgusting, sometimes you can barely walk in a straight line on that pavement!! I was under the impression that it was illegal to do so though, or maybe just inadmissible? I would hand the video to the council, possibly after following them home to get their address as well. Currently though I have n idea who it is or when they walk their dog...

That's also a good idea. Had the aerial ripped off my girlfriend's car before now. I'm pretty sure my neighbours would be happy to have a camera they can all review. It's certainly more palatable than seeing a CCTV camera on the front of someone's house and wondering what it's for.

I have two camera's recording outside my house both on the public road and path.

there's watching my car and my misses car, i put them up after we had a spell of vandles kicking wing mirror's and damaging cars......

once the camera's where up nothing happended on out street for ages then some punk kid did the same slashed two tyres on my car and smashed a window and wind mirror off my misses car I took the footage to the police they knew who it was straight away, charges them with criminal damage and after a long wait for the court to decide how much he should pay just short of £800 he paid it over a year......

Now I tend to name and shame the local Dog walkers that let there's dogs poop outside my house and not pick it up.... My kids are always stepping in it too so I put there's piccys up outside my house :-)

nothing wrong in CCTV's it's protection and prevetion in most cases - i do know that drug dealers tend to use CCTV's too to keep ad eye out for the law so maybe it's this

Sounds like a nice place to live, lol. :D

@OP, I believe in an eye for an eye. So I'd go out of my way, wasting time and money to put CCTV cameras up and record them, just to see how they like it. Immature? Tick. Waste of money? Tick. Waste of time? Tick. Satisfaction? Tick.

Well it'd give me satisfaction, and if they were up to no good, you may catch them in the act as well.

Well i agree with a lot of the points raised and it would help a lot of times with trouble. Maybe they have had trouble with people harrasing them. Maybe they have had problems with deliveries(Fedex driver anyone?) or maybe they park a car close and are sick of the scum damaging it because they are jellous. Anyway my point is that, as said before, you are on camera most places you go in the UK so why should your own street be any different. I would rather have it as a deterant for jellous scum and not have to worry about my car and not be bothered about it catching me while i walked to the shops.

I used to fit camera systems as part of a previous job.

We used to mask any public windows or doors with a privacy mask, so we wouldn't "invade" on someone's property. Think of those black rectangles you see on someone's face when they want their identity kept secret.

I cant speak for all firms, but there might be such a system in place here. Unless of course it's a B&Q special system :p

You can never have too much security! We have CCTV front, sides and back. The front ones overlook the cars as well as part of the road/pavement. If a robbery ever did occur and a vehicle was involved, it'd get caught by the cam.

How does that work? Software or sticky tape over the lense?

I'm going to be placing a small camera out front soon, It's straight onto the footpath as well. But someone decided they didn't like our cars and keyed all 3 just before xmas.
