Hi guys,

Just a quick one really. I dont want to follow some of the threads we have had recently, and get stung by estimated bills rather than actual bills.

When we get the keys today, what is generally the best approach? call the suppliers (Seven Trent and Powergen) and give them readings, explaining that we have 'just' moved in?

Any advise welcomed! :)

No need to ring them immediately , but take readings straight away yes.

Then ring them within a week or so at your convenience.

When i moved in to my house i did this , and when i rang them there was a discrepancy , the guys who had moved out had already rang and told them a much lower reading , gits.

Friends of ours who recently moved house were advised by their solicitor to take photographs of the meter readings because the ploy of the people leaving giving a lower reading to the companies is becoming increasingly common.

Excellent idea.
Do that with a current date newspaper in the picture and ring the readings through right away. Better than getting stung.

Ring through straight away, I always do. When you give them the reading they should tell you on the phone whether or not it tallies with what the last owner/tenant said. If it doesn't tally, then you might need to take a photo or whatever, but you could ask them what they would accept as proof.

You'd think really that it is the suppliers responsibility to check the reading wouldn't you. It seems totally wrong that they might try to pass the costs onto the next tennant.

Better to use a polaroid camera too, as some companies say digital photo's can be tampered with.
