House Deeds. Where do you keep them?

I bought a house this year, moved in 3 months ago. Last week the solicitors emailed me say my house deeds were ready for collection.

I assume they need keeping in a safe place, perhaps a fireproof safe or am I best paying a company to hold them for me?

(where’s the Home & DIY forum) :D

Mine are in a big envelope in the bottom of a cupboard. Been thinking about this lately and am going to put them in bank for safekeeping. I remember a solicitor telling me that if they ever got lost it would be a very expensive nightmare getting things sorted...

It matters not. Lenders do not keep them anymore as the deeds are now all electronic.

Paper ones are just nice to have as a bit of history of the house really. New houses no longer get issued with paper ones.

I believe when the mortgage on my dad's house was 'nearly paid off' he had some sort of arrangement whereby he still owes a nominal sum and the bank retains the house deeds.

Are they that important anymore? I thought you could buy a replacement for about £50.

This. While it's great to have a set if you own outright, the are not a legal necessity, as the records of paying the mortgage etc are in loads of other places. Even if they are lost due to fire, burglary etc, it's not that important as the house is still recorded as belonging to you, and as stated, you can get another copy.
