House/Flat Sharing

 I live on London, I'm basing that on my experience.

What don't you agree with it about it being in London?

By young I guess you mean sub 35?

35's a bit old to be renting....I plan to own my own home beofre then, but then again it may be closer to that if i were to buy in London. Where abouts in London are you? £460 a month is pretty good for what you are describing...

Hmmm guess i could have another look at part buying/renting i am still quite young and im only on 10K a year (gotta love starter salaries). if i were to house share i would make sure i meet the current residents before hand and would probably only move in with other working people rather than students. thanks for the advice every1 im although im even more confused than what i was to begin with lol :p

It's not really possible to move in with students due to council tax and landlords not wanting a mix. Not that you would want to. If you have a job you have to get up at certain times.

Can you even afford to rent on 10k?

anoth option worth considering is lodging, slightly different to the house share in that you will be renting a room in someone elses house and your likely to be the only one. More and more people are taking in lodgers with the current credit crunch particualrly those who bought expensive houses on there own.

Main advantages of this is obviously the house is likely to be better maintained as the owner lives there and it also likely to be a more peacfull environment if that is your thing.

Failing that I'd look to move in with someone you know at work for example or put a note up on the notice board to see if anyone you don't know would be interested, moving into a big house share with randoms is a lottery as evidenced by this thread some people have loved it and others have lived with skutters and hatted it.

But £10k isn't an awful lot to be moving out with or if you look at it this way, you will be spending near enough half your monthly income on rent. £400(ish) isn't that much to be spending on food, transport, socialising, entertainment, clothes etc. It is certainly do-able but you need to decide if moving out is more important to you than the luxuries you currently enjoy.

Just get to know the other occupants in a houseshare before you make any decisions - there's no shortage of rooms to rent and it'll put less strain on your finances than trying to rent a flat.

House sharing can be fun but imo the tings to look out for are:

people who love BASS
people who love LOUD
people who are LOUD

as well as those who are messy, and inconsiderate. also remeber that money can ruin friendships and changes people, do not take responsibility for the bills as you will end up paying and trying to get the money back.

If you have any peeves they will be petted unless your careful.

I had no other option but to house-share. This was due to my previous landlord selling up shop.

I moved in with 4 other people. The mum, who owns the place (and wasn't suppose to be living in the house, but now sleeps in the livingroom) and 3 other guys who are fine enough.

I wouldn't advise it really. 5 people trying to cook in the evening is a nightmare. 1 bathroom is a nightmare. the fact that we don't have a livingroom is a nightmare, and generally this is a nightmare.

Although.. it's cheap as 2 pairs of jeans, and is close to my work.

does she contribute to the rent? i know she owns it but she is 1. living there and 2. taking up your amenities.

Unless I have a reason to I don't see myself buying somewhere by myself - it's just a ridiculous waste of money IMO. But that's my personal opinion and I'm sure people will disagree - in which case we just have to agree to disagree.

I live in Dulwich, the total rent was due to be £1000 pcm, but I managed to come to an agreement of 925 pcm - I always try and get a deal or an arrangement. :)

You see I don't even know if I'm going to stay in the UK, and buying by myself would suffocate me and force my focus on being in the UK exclusively. Admittedly i could then rent it out whilst living elsewhere but I'm not sure. Buying is such an investment and such a risk, I have other things to spend my money on. Besides i don't really earn enough (just over the 40% bracket) to get something by myself, not with the lifestyle I like to live, and I'm not going to sacrifice that when I can live the high life whilst still having a good roof over my head.

It's not for everyone - we do seem to have a fixation in this country for buying property... I have quite a bit of equity abroad so I suppose I'm a bit of a hypocrite, but I own those properties out right - no mortgage (family heritage). So for me owning a place here is less important I guess. :)
