I don't know what the deal is this year...but in Aberdeen and the surrounding area there are a ridiculous amount of hover flies, never seen it like this before in previous years. The front of my car is absolute carnage with hundreds of dead hover flies stuck to it...and boy do they bleed, my car used to be white but now its pinky red at the front. As soon as you park up you then have 10 or 20 of them pop along to feed on the corpses.

It sounds like rain when you're driving through some areas, with a constant downpour of hover flies bouncing/splatting off the windscreen.

Just parked infront of a huge tree at work this morning to see the whole thing pretty much moving with hover flies...

Anyone know a reason for this? Is this the case in any other area or just here?!

I've noticed that here as well, hundreds of the things in my garden.

So I just got some pics :p

we've had a load of wasps in East Anglia recently, but not to the extent of those hover flies!

Getting looooads of these on the South East coast. It's very annoying when you're sat eating your ice cream, hover fly comes along, you think it's a wasp, you run away...then realise it was a ruddy hover fly and you've just made yourself look an idiot :p

Do they have any offensive capabilities whatsoever?

Hovering uncomfortably near your beverage does not count.

Apparently their defenses consist of looking like a wasp so things are scared of it and tasting rank...but I heard they have training camps where they're being trained to use crude firearms

They only tend to come out in droves for a week or so then vanish for the rest of the year.

However, if you would like the more GD orientated answer please read below.
