How are Dual Core Processors Controlled?

Windows ME isnt even a proper 32bit operating system, its a hybrid 16/32bit system.

While it is able to run 32bit applications, the GUI is 16bit, and there are several other parts which are basic 16bit code (Thats why you can run virtually any 'DOS' game on ME).

To be honest, ME's a worse OS than Windows 98SE. Worst of all its no longer supported by Microsoft, so any 'critical' security flaws will go unfixed.

Windows XP was pretty good even during beta, and it was perfectly usable long before SP1 was release, It certainly didnt take 6 years to get XP to a stable state. Sure lots of security bugs have been found, and then repaired, hence the need to keep XP patched up to date, but Microsoft have acted pretty responsibly, working to keep XP patched and secure.

Im not a huge MS fan, but XP has got to be the best Microsoft product released in the last 25 Years. (The previous 'good one' was MS-Dos 3.2)

Agreed. It's 98SE with a few bells and whistles that don't work properly. It also has poor task and memory management, and any security flaws won't be patched properly since Microsoft has ceased support for the OS. At least get 2000 Pro.

Hi Corasik.

I know WinME is a hybrid 16/32bit system but that just makes it more flexible as you have pointed out.

As my install is fast, stable and flexible what are the real world day to day benefits of using a 32bit OS vs 16/32bit OS?

I'm not against WinXP as such but I feel it is proberly too late in the day for me to migrate. With support coming to an end soon I would be no better off.

Vista as it stands is not for me so Linux appears to be the way to go as I can customize a distro to meet my needs.

Although I would not recommend WinME to others, because of its general reputation as the worst MS OS, my personal experience is different so I will continue to use it.

Lastly, I think the best MS products (at their time) were Win95 and MS InteliMouse Explorer.

Thanks for taking time to reply.

I dont even know why you are arguing... XP has better memory management, is more stable, allows for bigger harddrives and memory, is more secure, has better network support and capabilities... the list goes on.

Regardless of whether or not you think ME is faster than XP, you are wrong.

To be honest, ME probably is faster if you're just poking around Windows, on the net, etc, particularly on a lower-spec system. But the moment you apply any significant workload to the machine - especially if you're multitasking - XP will manage resources much better as well as being more stable, resulting in a faster system. I wouldn't want to do any serious gaming, encoding or distributed computing on a ME machine. (Though the security flaws would put me off using it in the first place!)

Realise we've taken this rather off-topic, but the original question has been answered :)
