How 'bad' is a 2nd hand used mining card

but why would you send it back to the retailer if you've bought it second hand. just rma it to the manufacturer with the receipt/invoice and tell them you've moved address.

A number of reasons

1. Retailer was OCUK
2. If you go to MSI direct they say RMA via the retailer
3. I would be lying and committing identity fraud if i did as you suggest
4. Dont technically have a contract with the Manufacturer, its with the Retailer.
5. Have more consumer rights dealing with Retailer. (ie more options available to me)

Only time i would go to the Manufacturer is if it is beyond 2 years and/or the retailer has went bust.

:)

if thats the case and u said it's a hassle for you to contact the person you bought it from if you needed to rma it then i suggest not to buy second hand hardware.

?? Uhmm the price discount you get from second hand makes it very very much worthwhile! Yes there is a chance that there is something wrong with the card but that's a chance you have to take.

Found your suggested identity fraud advice quite bizarre

maybe i worded it wrong

how is it identity fraud if u get a signed receipt from the seller when you buy it, saying you've bought it from he/she and is allowing you to use the invoice if anything goes wrong with it then send that with the invoice and tell the manufacturer that you want the replacement card sent to a different address instead of the address on the invoice.

^^ Mainly because the retailer doesn't have a contract with you. Also doubtful that some scribbling on an invoice transfers entire purchase rights to you...have you tried this in the past? Would be interested to know how it went.

Also dunno why you prefer to go straight to the manufacturer if anything's wrong that's bizarre to me when the first port of call is always to the retailer.

i had a friend who bought a second hand motherboard which was about 7 months old and the seller gave him the receipt from the shop and after about 2/3months something went wrong due to he updated the bios wrong or something like that and he just rma'ed it to the gigabyte without any issues

i never said i prefer to go straight to the manufacturer. you are the one who said it's a hassle to get in contact with the seller to get the product rma'ed to the retailer, hassle why i'm saying the only other way is to rma it to the manufacturer with the invoice/receipt.

honestly I wouldn't bother with 7990 crossfire (quadfire)

I ran that setup and my 4770k couldn't cope.

I now run 2x290p and the performance is much better.

you're not kidding.............the 7990 is a total disaster, it's way too hot, i cant run it for more than 5 minutes, it hits 95 degrees no matter how you cool it.

I only ever saw those kind of temps when running two 7990's on air.

It is a hot running card, but I think there's something wrong with yours or your setup if it's hitting 95 in five minutes.

your going to need to undervolt the card.

tbh they do run hot but they also need serious cooling through your case.

When I had 2 7990s mining I reduced core clocks and voltages to keep the temps (including VRMs) below 80 degrees.

BTW for those who think us "miners" like to torture our cards 24/7 and that buying 2nd mining hardware is stupid.

This is a 6 card 280x system which is always being monitored and tweaked to offer best return at lowest cost (electric)

Thats currently at 1020 core and 1350 memory (memory underclocked, core slightly overclocked from 1000) and with a voltage of 1.063v, default voltage for these cards is 1.075v. Fan is set to 70% so I could run the fan faster and get better temps if I wanted to however running the fan at 100% will kill the bearings.

I also have a desk top fan blowing 24/7 over the entire rig - including the PSUs and motherboard.

The vast majority of miners will look after their hardware as it's in their best interest to keep it in good nick when it comes to selling/moving on so they get a decent price.

I also have a three card 290 system which runs at 70-73 degrees with -31mv, 947 core and 1250 memory and auto fan which runs around 70%
