How bad is it to drink Vodka once a week?

been doing every weekend since i was 15 so wee will see in a couple years LOL, i cant drink fanta orange without thinking about vodka its horrible!

I love being a lightweight, I can have 6 units in one sitting and be fairly drunk.
12 units a week is what I am on now, awesome :). My doctor will be happy.

I guess it helps that I can't stand beer, so I don't drink alcohol unless I am being social.
But I have a question for any medical gurus, as I am a lightweight ( I can get drunk quicker than most girls of the same height). Should my unit allowance be lowered?

I have arthritis, and I take methotrexate for it.

I am just starting on methotrexate for Psoriatic Arthritis . I was told under no terms should I exceed the recommended daily unit intake.
Before I start them though, I need to have a lung check and a chest x-ray. Cause I am a smoker. Plus all of the blood tests!
Fun times!

I think that if you feel the need to have regular LFTs to monitor your liver at 23 because of your drinking habits then you also have an unhealthy relationship with alcohol and you are aware of it, in fact you have said as much.....Either that or all the literature on the dangers of binge drinking and rapid consumption of alcohol is simply lip service, particularly with regard to drinking habits which can lead to a harmful relationship with alcohol. Edit: it seems you have a particular medical reason to have LFTs so disregard the unhealthy relationship bit..:).

It's part of taking methotrexate. You have to do them.

I told someone drinking 9 units nightly that it was too much, but apparently his doctor didn't seem perturbed, seemed to think it wasn't that much. Assuming he was up front with the doc, I would at least expect the advice to be that he should cut down. Mind you, I'm not sure the area was the best known for its sobriety so that might have had an impact.

I expect to see you here in a few year’s time when it’s three or four bottles a week and you’re on the slippery road to a rehab clinic.

Everything kills you eventually, if smashing in a bottle of vodka once a week keeps you entertained then go for it I say. I wouldn't think that amount do anymore harm than drinking does to you anyway.

On the way to work the other day i stopped off in our local shop for some breakfast and someone was buying a bottle of whiskey at 8am lol

Reminds me of the story my parents told me about a distant relative who would use whiskey instead of milk for their corn flakes...

Just putting it into perspective, ~75% of a 35cl bottle of vodka is roughly equivalent to a whole bottle of wine in terms of total alcohol. Would people still be saying it's as harmful if the OP was drinking a bottle of wine over a couple of hours?

That's what they all say.

I expect it will at some point in time or give you health problems.

I'm sure it will, but we're not there just yet.

I'm genuinely curious on how/why you drink that much (I don't mean to sound offensive, that's just generally a lot of alcohol in my opinion)?

When I get home from work a vodka and orange does the trick, pint glass with ice, half vodka and half orange. Having been drinking it for years now those measures allow me to actually taste the vodka.

It's ritualistic I guess. As unhealthy as my other habits, but more frowned upon for some reason. But I don't drink to get blotto, nor do I get drunk on the amount I drink each night, for me it's just a way of unwinding and shedding the stresses and strains of the day. :)

You may or may not be an alcoholic, regardless of that there's a real issue if you feel the need to come home at night and fire 1/3 of a pint of vodka down you (or more depending how much ice), as much as you need to smoke because you're addicted...

Just to be clear. I am not asking if I have a drinking problem.

I'm just wondering if the amount of Vodka I drink is going to be harmfull over the long term, if 'm doing it 3-4 times a month.

I think the size of the bottle is 375ml. Its basically the size down from the full bottle.

I have in the past drank the whole thing, but since scalled it down to just 3/4.

To be honest I probably dont need to drink that much, and could get away with a bottle half the size.

When I drink this amount, I am fully in control of my faculties, I'm just a little bit 'looser' with the ladies.

It got me thinking, becuase a few months back I went in for a knee op, and during the pre assesment, they ask you do you smoke do you drink etc... I said yea I drink, and they where very intereted to know how much and what of etc...

How long is a piece of string??

Depends on so many factors, age, sex, ability to process alcohol, reasons for using.

It's certainly no health tonic and an addictive drug for some people. But I have seen and experienced people drinking way, way more than this and although their still alive, drinking has caused them many health and social issues and have heard of quite a few horror stories of very unpleasant deaths.

The problem is really your propensity to get addicted and it sounds like your "using it" for confidence rather than "enjoying it". This is where it can start becoming a problem for some.

It produces GABA a calming neurotransmitter in your brain. Your brain likes to stay in balance and will start slowing it's own production of GABA to compensate - you'll then start developing tolerance and need more alcohol to reach the same "buzz".

As others have said if you are sufficiently concerned see a doctor and ask for a Liver Function Test. If your liver has been taking a battering then lay off the juice and your liver should regenerate itself.
