how bad is your mpg commuting to work?

Only going between wallingford and reading at the mo as i have a contract in london, so obviously the short (19 miles each way) journey hits my economy somewhat.

Currently sitting on a long term of 21mpg. Basically a gallon each way in reality.

Mines isn't too bad 17 miles down a A road and then into the centre of Edinburgh I get around 37-38mpg. The A71 is pretty much a solid 50-55mph when I head in so it gets my average well over 40mpg to then drop when I hit the city centre.

its around 25mpg, rises to about 27 over the school holiday (shakes fist at commuting sprogs) 30 miles each way - the work end 6miles are at a crawl, the rest is pretty much at the limit or cruising the M25 between 40 & 60.

I'm still amazed at this. I got 35mpg around town from a Stop-Start fitted 118d and 320d, yet you thrash it with an older 330d?!

I don't thrash it, I barely tickle it to and from work, it's all 30 limits and a boring drive.

What is more unbelievable is my A road weekend, which saw an average of 56.2MPG either doing the speed limit or keeping up with what was in front (whichever was slower).

There is noway a 330d gets that, can bet you my 1.9 Astra CDTi wouldn't get that on a 4 mile each way trip.

If you really don't believe it, I'll bloody video it, starting with resetting the trip comp and doing my route to work.

Due to my working hours, my drive to work involves almost no traffic, so rarely having to stop except for at three junctions.

33mpg on a very bad day, on a good day 45ish.. Usually get around 38 though so not too bad.

Thats in a Leon FR! :)

I'm amazed it gets such good figures :) What is the book figure for the 330d on combined cycle?

My economy on the way to college is brilliant, im in no rush so i cruise at 60 ish and dont really bother about getting there in any great hurry. On the way back home though, when i cant be bothered and just want my dinner, economy plummets.

I get under 400 miles to a tank on daily commuting if I leave after 7am.

If I leave at 6:30am then I can get 500 miles from the tank!

So around 27MPG vs 39-42MPG depending on fuel used.

25mpg in my rover 200 1.4 due to a short commute.

46mpg in a old fiesta 1.8d when mine was out of action for a while.

I would save a fortune in a diesel despite only doing a few thousand mile a year thanks to stop-start traffic and cold running on a petrol engine.

No, you would save, based on 'a few thousand a year' (A few being, what, 3000?), £21 a month.

Not 'a fortune'.

My remapped a4 trip computer says anything between 50mpg and 54mpg a road drives between reading and didcot.
no idea how accurate the computer is though. This is driving very gently though 6th gear anything over 35mph, no point doing anything else on the commute.
however saves me a fair amount over my c230 kompressor I used to have

Andy

Don't have a readout but overall I get about 30mpg that's a daily commute of 3 miles each way :/

I usually average 30-38MPG depending on how much fun I have, on my commute to North London - A33 -> M3 -> M25 -> J19.

If I stick at 60-70 in the left lane, I can get over 40MPG.

Not bad for a 200bhp Turbo Hot hatch :)

22mpg on the Cefiro, on a commute that's about 30 mins Welsh A roads and then 2 - 8 hours motorway.

I probably ought to replace the lambda sensor at some point, it's still running the original from 1993.
