how big is the ubuntu install ?

I want to split a partition up to install Ubuntu and mess about with beryl/xgl how big should i make it 10Gb? 15Gb?

I installed Ubuntu the other day on my Macbook (using Parallels) and the VM file size seems to be 2Gb, so I'd guess it's using around that much space (I've compacted it and moved it to another PC, so I can't open it up and check exactly.)

So 10Gb should be more than enough

10Gb will be enough. It's only installed off 1 CD and the final install size is under 2Gb. You will also need a seperate 1-2Gb swap partition.

Yes, I'd say 10Gb for your / partition will be plenty. As for the swap partition, I use twice the amount of RAM I have, as a general rule.

it partitions as ext2 aswell i think so hte partition isnt visible in windows

IIRC there is an ext2 driver available so that you can mount these partitions in Windows.
