How can anyone drink Root Beer?

When I was 12 'ish. We went to mcdonalds in liverpool..
Got a meal with a coke, Sat down took a swig and nearly puked... Told my mum I think they've left cleaner in the coke machine as this tastes of disinfectant.
Turns out people actually drink liquid Germolene

When I was a kid in the 70's all the cowboys on the old B/W american cowboys and indians shows always seemed to be guzzling root beer. Either that or "sassparilly". I became fascinated by what this stuff was. But with no ready access to the stuff as a) I was a kid, and b) the pop bloke only had the usual cola, orange etc, it wasn't until maybe 20 years later I happened upon some in a supermarket. And yeah, it was like drinking liquidised aniseed rock.

You’re thinking of Sarsaparilla. That’s a nice drink that for some reason, became the traditional drink to have with pie, mash and liquor in the London P&M shops. It’s sold in all of them.

Was a sad day when Mcdonalds stopped selling it.
My go-to soft drink when visiting the US but still easy enough to get here.

I absolutely love the stuff! And yes a Sasparilla is a Root Beer. They just changed the name. That’s what Disney’s Carousel of Progress told me anyway!

Funny this should pop up, we went to Home Bargains today, my wife saw it and bought 4 cans, tasted awful, for reference, I'm 31 and the wife is 29, tasted like mouthwash tbh, wasn't a fan... £3 we aren't getting back

It's been years since trying Root Beer, last time on holiday in Florida and swore never again.

Nowadays equivalent are energy drinks, I don't get the appeal at all, a horrible chemical taste.

I believe the spice rum and dandelion and burdock drink was created down the Falkland Islands. And it goes down like pop. It was nicknamed 'weedkiller' for some reason.
