You’re thinking of Sarsaparilla. That’s a nice drink that for some reason, became the traditional drink to have with pie, mash and liquor in the London P&M shops. It’s sold in all of them. When I was a kid in the 70's all the cowboys on the old B/W american cowboys and indians shows always seemed to be guzzling root beer. Either that or "sassparilly". I became fascinated by what this stuff was. But with no ready access to the stuff as a) I was a kid, and b) the pop bloke only had the usual cola, orange etc, it wasn't until maybe 20 years later I happened upon some in a supermarket. And yeah, it was like drinking liquidised aniseed rock.
The Americans think we are weird drinking dandelion and burdock.
