Yes, you can. You'll need to open up a port on their router/firewall to let you in though. You could put an FTP server on their machine for you to access. BulletproofFTP is a good one for Windows. If, by chance, they have a Mac then an FTP server is already installed. Just turn it on.

nope, they are running xp pro sp2

how is this done? what IP's do i need, subnets etc???

You need the IP of the machine you are planning on accessing, go on to the router and create a port fowarding rule to send port 21 to the ip address of the machine.

Install bulletproof FTP on to the machine (create user account) and then all you need is the public ip address of your parents internet connection which you then use on your own pc by going to ftp://username:password@ipaddress

Or you could setup vpn if your router supports it.

right ive got all the IPs and forwarding etc sorted

im using the bpftp server on my paretns machine and the bpftp client on my machine.

when i try to connect to their machine i get an error 530 cant log in: 'invalid home dir' !

whats wrong?

Or even easier you can just remote desktop from your machine to their machine and copy the files that way.
