As the topic suggest without upgrading my wireless router (and keeping to a reasonable budget) how can i upgrade the signal that my computer receives. My brothers both get 5/5 signal and i get anywhere from 1-4/5. Im the only gamer and it's annoying me that there rooms are slightly close to the router and getting a lot better signal with identicle wireless cards.

Im hoping that you can buy perhaps extended antennas that fit to wireless cards, or hoping of some home made signal boosting methods using wire :P

Please suggest how i might improve my signal strength :)

Thanks in advance :)

you can change the antener for a better one, I think

there is loads of places the sell them including the local auction site

i dont think ocuk sell upgraded ones though

Parabolics (tin foil is optional) are cheap, higher gain antenna is also cheap, the other option is moving the router or the pc. Netstumbler will give you an indication as to where will get you a better signal, the other option is if you have a DD-WRT flashable router you can turn up the power a little to improve things.

i have a linksys router and from what i have very quickly googled it seems that my router is compatible with those DD-WRT. And they seem very good too ^^ from what i have read, might just try them :P

p.s. i also won a high gain 9db antenna off an auction

If your linksys router is the Linux version of the WRT54G wireless router then yes, it is compatible with DD-WRT. I have it on mine and it's excellent. Signal boosting works a treat, also have full QOS and traffic shaping which is excellent. If your router is pretty old it will be linux anyway, if it's newer it needs to be the linux version (linksys scrapped it and released a non linux version with less memory, then reintroduced a special 'L' version after people moaned about it). So yeah, check your version number to make sure and be *really* careful if you upgrade lest you brick your router.

Which router is it, and which version (1.1, etc)?

Look into getting the Tomato firmware (Link). A lot of people like it, purely because it is light on the router's resources - as well as improving upon and/or adding features. The firmware is so light on resources, it shows when accessing the router's web interface

i got the WRT54G one. i dot the DD-WRT firmware up n running n can overclock or overvolt or wotever it is reasonably safely n this ahs helped me. Plus with a high gain antenna coming it will no doubt sort me out :)

Careful overclocking it. I seem to remember anything about 214MHz is usually unstable.
