Hi there,
I will soon be going to uni and would like to take some tech with me. I would like to use the uni's internet connection, but I want to make sure that no one else can access my stuff like my chromecast.

Is this possible?
thanks,
Sam

If it's a wired connection you'd usually just plug a cable router into the provided Ethernet port. As long as it's configured properly (and the only thing you really need you worry about is the subnet) you'll have your own private network.

If you're planning to do this check the terms of use. There may be rules against it, and if they care they would be able to tell. You could, just possibly, find yourself kicked off their network.

If it's wireless they'll presumably have wireless isolation enabled.

Oh who cares if how you use the Uni internet is against the terms of use! :p

Only concern yourself with whether it works or not! :D

OK brilliant, so it will be possible with jsut a router then, i am hoping that i will be able to do it with an old Netgear WGR614 Wireless-G Router from sky which I have over written the firmware on ...
if anyone out there knows this router would it be possible to use it?
and would it need dhcp on or off?

DHCP would need to be on, as the router will act as a dhcp server handing out addresses in your subnet, with the ethernet cable to the Uni connection acting basically as a default route to the Internet.

Thanks, I though that wouls be the case.
On the router that I would be using there is no specific input ethernet port as when it is in normal operation the input is from the telephone line.
is that still ok, or would i probably need a router as apposed to a modem?

You'll need a router, as I expect the internet will be fed to your dorm room as either an ethernet cable coming out of the wall, or an ethernet socket in the wall.

A cable router would work, as they don't require a telephone input. They use a WAN port, which fits they RJ45 ethernet connector.

OK brilliant,
Please could you recommend a "student" priced option that shouldn't be too hard to setup?

yes

If you have a ddwrt or a tomato router you can have 2 subnets - one for your Uni network and one for your personal network . You can then using iptables restrict access between the 2 subnets so you can still access the internet via the uni network but no access to your own network

I have a document for this I can share, something like a Cisco E2000 can do this, cost about 25 quid second hand.

I have such a setup at home, 2 subnets one for the kids with bandwidth restriction and one for me.

Ahh brilliant, If you could give me a link to the document that would be brilliant, meanwhile I will try to find one the isnt coming from the USA...
or can i look for any ddwrt router to do it with?

and the WRT400N?

I have no personal experience with those, so I can't comment. I have had a couple of the D-Links though, both were awful for network drop-outs and other such slowdowns and annoyances, they needed to be re-set increasingly often, until they both died in the same way. Suddenly and without warning.

I literally tried to connect to the internet, it didn't work, so I looked at the router, and it was completely lifeless... :p

I didn't even give them hard lives!

ohh right ok then,
is there anything that I can put on an old netbook, like some linix based system that can do this all for me? it has an ethernet port, so i would get another usb ethernet adapter and the netbook also has wifi?
Seems like the perfect use for a slow machine
