Hey guys,

How can i password protect a folder in my computer, you see my computer is used by my family, so as we are all sharing it, someone is always installing all sorts of files. Like today they installed the new Google desktop, and i really don't like that program as it can allow you to search for anything that you been browsing off the net as well as search for anything on your computer using a key word search.

How can i password protect some of my folders on my computer to stop family members from searching the computer and getting access to my files?

Any help much appreciated

Many thanks

Hi,

Within the Google Desktop Search preferences you can choose the folders you don't want it to search.

Craig.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the replys,

Hi Craig, i already know how you can choose the folders you don't want it to search, but thanks anyway. I still would like to password protect my files.

Shaolin Chicken thanks for the link, from what i read it seems windows does not have a password protect feature built in, you know one where you can select a username and password, the link states i will need to use a third party program. So i better do that.

thanks for all your help guys

That looks like what ive been hunting for. Is there any way to set where to have the private folder? Ie does it have to be in 'my documents'?

Do you know where I can get it from mate??

The best way to hide your porn is to simply shove it in a folder in the C:\Windows directory called system31 or something.

heres my tip

if your using Win XP Pro, enable advanced file sharing

Then "disable inherited permissions" and remove all permissions from the folder, and make your user account the owner of the file

No when you enter the folder it will give you "access denied"

to get back into the folder, go back into advanced folder permissions and add your user account in. You can now access the folder

remove it again when you've finished with the folder. Chances are nobody will now how to get it back, let alone parents/ spouse's etc..

that way, even if they guess the password to your account, its still safe.
