How can I squeeze more performance out of my smallish budget?

Hi
currently I am going for...

  • AMD A10-6800K Black Edition 4.10GHz (Socket FM2) APU Richland Quad Core Processor
  • Asus F2A55-M LE AMD A55 Chipset (Socket FM2) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard
  • Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (ST1000DM003) HDD
  • TeamGroup Elite 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit
  • Corsair Builder Series CX 430W V2 '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply
  • Anidees AI4 Micro ATX Tower Case - Black

My budget is "as close to £350 as possible" and the build is currently about £358

I am NOT changing the case, it is the only thing that has to look nice and I don't mind spending a little extra on it.

EDIT: The PC will be primarily for gaming, but may also be used for some very light video editing as well as general school work and redditing.

The only way your getting more bang is to get something from clearance and then buy faster ram or OC the RAM as the APU is heavily dependent on RAM speed

The A55 chipset lacks sataIII and OC'ing options I think you'll find. The A75 is the minimum I would use. The APU would prefer faster RAM to help the IGP, if you won't be gaming consider the A8K instead.

It's hard to give advice to balance things out without knowing what the rig is for

Like mentioned above the ram speed is probably the most important part with the AMD APU's. The graphics on them relies heavily on the ram speed. Try to squeeze the fastest ram you can into your budget!

I got this far,

Gives you something to work with.

The A10 5800K isn't that much slower than the 6800K, you need a A75/A85/A88 chipset for overclocking.

thanks, you mentioned needing a better board for over clocking, is the one you suggested here one of that nature?

also, would this build run ok with 4Gig of RAM? obviously I would upgrade asap but would i get reasonable results while I save?

That board will allow you to overclock the APU, it will work just fine with 4GB of RAM,

I take you are talking about a single RAM stick now, then the second later on to give you "dual channel", which you can do.

YOUR BASKET
1 x AMD A10-5800K Black Edition 3.80GHz (Socket FM2) APU Trinity Quad Core Processor (AD580KWOHJBOX) £99.95
1 x Anidees AI4 Micro ATX Tower Case - Black £69.9
1 x Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (ST1000DM003) HDD £43.99
1 x Corsair Builder Series CX 430w Modular '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply (CP-9020058-UK) £43.99
1 x **B Grade** Gigabyte F2A85XM-D3H AMD A85X Chipset (Socket FM2) DDR3 micro ATX Motherboard £40
1 x Patriot Viper 3 "Venom Red" 4GB DDR3 PC3-17200C11 2133MHz Single Module (P34G211UR) £37.99
Total : £347.82 (includes shipping : £10.00).

do you think it would be worth the extra £10 going for the 6800k?

thanks for all your help so far though!

I had the 5800k apu - it ran games pretty well. I got an early copy of Payday 2 a few weeks before its release and thats when I noticed it was a little sluggish - but still playable. So I threw in a dedicated GPU. I went for about a year using the APU for output. Im guessing the one you're getting is much faster. so you should be pretty happy with it.

I've had both, I kept the 5800K, it also behaves better with faster RAM than the 6800K did (but that could have just been my sample).

I wonder if the 5800K still comes with this
