How can I transfer large files?

Hi I have a dilemma,

I have some .ISO files on desktop PC and want to put them onto my laptop.

I have an external HD but it is Fat32. So wont allow files over the 4gb limit


I can send them wireless to the laptop but that would take hours.

Is there any way I can put my laptop next to my PC (both win 7, 1x32/1x64)

and connect one of these ethernet cables to each other and send them that way?

I already have laptop and desktop set up as network.

Just wondered what the best way and how to do it is.

You could try using HJsplit to split the files into manageable chunks on the desktop, transfer to the laptop via the external drive, then rejoin then again?.
 
it is transparent, you can split anything with it and it'll stitch it all back together again on the other side as if nothing has ever happened. :)
 
Is it easy to pop the HD out of the laptop? Then you can connect it directly to the PC.

Otherwise, it may be possible to network them directly. You used to need a crossover cable for this but some NICs do auto-crossover these days.
 
99.9% your NIC will support MDIX so you can use any ethernet cable between your computers and it will work. Just set their IPs to static within the same subnet e.g. Laptop 192.168.0.2 255.255.255.0, Computer 192.168.0.3 255.255.255.0

reason was originally I had it as fat32 so to be able to use it with my PS3.

I have about 300GB free on the external HD so could convert that to NTFS. But I wouldnt know how to do that.

I dont want to loose any data that is already on it. So if somehow for the time being someone can tell me how to convert say 150GB of it into NTFS that would be great.

This should work fine, connected two pcs, cat5e cable, getting about 80MB/s transfers. Limited by hard drive speeds.
 
To save messing with any settings

Grab your router, put it between your pc and laptop, connect them all up with network cables to the router and you're off
 
sorry getting confused here.

they are networked. ie: i can see and move files on laptop from desktop and visa versa.

router is in lounge behind cupboard connected to master BT socket.

Laptop to router = wireless
desktop pc to router = usb wireless adapter


So??? getting a bit confused here. if i just get a ethernet cable and plug one end into laptop and other into desktop pc. will I then see something ? or just send files as though using wireless/network?

I get easily confused. Wouldn't matter if stupid fat32 would allow files bigger than 4gb
 
yes i may do that. Just thought as someone above mentioned. maybe quicker if i can just connect one computer to another with a spare ethernet cable that I have.


Just dont know how to do it.
 
ok, just got home from work, set both pc and laptop up as same workgroup. connected ehternet cable and rebooted.

Sending a 5gb file from pc to laptop=5 mins.

unplugged ethernet cable, tried again=1 hour over wireless network

Then tried putting ethernet cable in again and it wouldnt work. So rebooted with cable in and working fine.

So I guess, for some reason, ethernet cable has to be in when you turn on computers for this to work?

PS: what is this called that I have done/learnt?

Is it a LAN? a wired network?
